If a nuclear weapon is exploded in a vacuum-i. e., in space-the complexion of weapon effects changes drastically: First, in the absence of an atmosphere, blast disappears completely. Second, thermal radiation, as usually defined, also disappears.

Are there explosions in space?

In space no one can hear you explode… Many astronomical objects such as novae, supernovae and black hole mergers are known to catastrophically 'explode'. ... But as long as the explosion doesn't require oxygen, then it will work in much the same way in space as on Earth.

Can astronauts hear explosions in space?

No, you cannot hear any sounds in near-empty regions of space. Sound travels through the vibration of atoms and molecules in a medium (such as air or water). In space, where there is no air, sound has no way to travel.

Does an explosion create a vacuum?

All explosions create a vacuum space. Due to the expansion of vacuum space, shock wave occur (figure 3). Figure 3. Area expansion during the explosion.

How do Explosions hurt you?

High explosive blasts can cause skull fractures, fractured bones, head injuries, or any traumatic injury (open or closed injuries, chest, abdominal, pelvic injuries, amputations, spinal injuries, and any others). Structural collapse and entrapment can cause crush injuries and compartment syndrome.

Three Ways to Destroy the Universe

Do you feel pain when you explode?

They feel a jolting sensation that is not like anything they've ever experienced before in their lives. It can be much more severe than that and produce unconsciousness and damage to the body. Some of that is related to other aspects of the explosion obviously.

What does an explosion do to the human body?

The main direct, primary effect to humans from an explosion is the sudden increase in pressure that occurs as a blast wave passes. It can cause injury to pressure- sensitive human organs, such as ears and lungs.

How can you protect yourself from explosions?

1. Get under a sturdy table or desk if things are falling around you. ...
2. Do not use elevators.
3. Stay low if there is smoke. ...
4. Check for fire and other hazards.
5. Once you are out, do not stand in front of windows, glass doors or other potentially hazardous areas.

What happens when a bomb explodes near you?

People near the blast site would be exposed to high levels of radiation causing severe skin burns, shock and death within minutes to days. People farther away may be exposed to lower doses of radiation from the blast or by breathing air, eating food or drinking water that is contaminated with fallout.

Does an explosion absorb energy?

The energy of a blast shock wave dissipates relatively quickly with distance [3]. When a blast shock wave interacts with a medium (solid, liquid, gas or plasma), the energy can be absorbed or transformed to kinetic energy of the medium that accelerates a body of a given mass from rest to its stated velocity.

Why can't you hear an explosion in space?

To travel to us from outer space, the wave must be able to travel through regions of space which are essentially vacuum (nothing there). Sound cannot do this, as it requires a medium to propagate in, so we would not be able to hear the explosion.

Why we Cannot talk in space?

In fact, the middle of space is very quiet. ... Because there is nothing out in space (like an atmosphere), the sound waves from one astronaut's whistling can't travel over to the other astronaut's ears. That's why the astronauts use radios to communicate—even if they're floating in space right next to each other!

Why is space completely silent?

In space, no one can hear you scream. This is because there is no air in space – it is a vacuum. Sound waves cannot travel through a vacuum. ... Space is usually regarded as being completely empty.

What was the biggest explosion ever in space?

The news: Astronomers have detected the biggest explosion in space that's ever been observed. The massive eruption occurred in the Ophiuchus cluster, about 390 million light-years from Earth, where thousands of individual galaxies mingle with hot gas and dark matter.

Can you survive a nuclear bomb in a fridge?

GEORGE LUCAS IS WRONG: You Can't Survive A Nuclear Bomb By Hiding In A Fridge. ... “The odds of surviving that refrigerator — from a lot of scientists — are about 50-50,” Lucas said. But science has spoken, and it says something a little different.

What happens if a nuclear bomb goes off in space?

If a nuclear weapon is exploded in a vacuum-i. e., in space-the complexion of weapon effects changes drastically: First, in the absence of an atmosphere, blast disappears completely. ... There is no longer any air for the blast wave to heat and much higher frequency radiation is emitted from the weapon itself.

How far away from a nuclear bomb is safe?

This will help provide protection from the blast, heat, and radiation of the detonation. When you have reached a safe place, try to maintain a distance of at least six feet between yourself and people who are not part of your household.

What causes explosion?

An explosion is caused by a rapid expansion of gas from a chemical reaction or an incendiary device. Signs of an explosion may be a very loud sound or a series of noises and vibrations, fire, heat, smoke, falling glass or debris.

How do you respond to an explosion in your home?

Close the door to the room if the fire is contained there. Leave the building immediately. Inform others as you pass them to leave the building immediately. Walk—don't run—to the nearest exit.
...
Relay the following information:

1. Your location.
2. Cause of the explosion, if known.
3. Area where explosion occurred.
4. Injuries.

Has a nuclear bomb ever exploded?

Tsar Bomba, October 30, 1961: largest nuclear weapon ever detonated, with a design yield of 100 Mt, de-rated to 50 Mt for the test drop.

How hot is an explosion?

A primary form of energy from a nuclear explosion is thermal radiation. Initially, most of this energy goes into heating the bomb materials and the air in the vicinity of the blast. Temperatures of a nuclear explosion reach those in the interior of the sun, about 100,000,000° Celsius, and produce a brilliant fireball.

What are the 4 types of blast injuries?

The four basic mechanisms of blast injury are termed as primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary (Table 1).

Can your heart fall out place?

Don't worry, your heart can't actually explode. However, several things can make you feel like your heart's about to explode. Some conditions can even cause a wall of your heart to rupture, though this is very rare.

Why did it feel like my heart popped?

Anxiety or panic attack

A chronic stress or anxiety disorder can cause tension in the chest. This tension can contribute to symptoms such as a popping sound or pain. In some cases, a person having a panic attack may confuse the symptoms for those of a heart attack.
