Anisole is a standard reagent of both practical and pedagogical value. It can be prepared by the Williamson ether synthesis; sodium phenoxide is reacted with a methyl halide to yield anisole.

How will you prepare anisole by Williamson method?

Complete step by step answer:

Anisole is prepared by the action of methyl iodide on sodium phenoxide. This reaction is called Williamson's synthesis. Williamson's synthesis: This is one of the best methods for the preparation of ethers. It involves the treatment of an alkyl halide with a suitable sodium alkoxide.

What is the use of anisole?

Anisole is a starting raw material to be chemically transformed by Pharmaceuticals Industries (technical grade). Its appearance is a clear liquid. Anisole presents a wide range of applications: solvent for chemical reactions, synthesis intermediates and solvent for electronics.

What is the reaction of anisole?

The phenol reacts with sodium hydroxide and give phenoxide ion which reacts with methyl to give anisole. This is correct answer.

How is anisole prepared by Williamson's synthesis method give the equation?

Anisole or methoxy benzene is an organic compound with the formula CH3OC6H5.
...

1. Williamson's synthesis. C6H5−ONa+Br−CH3→C6H5−OCH3+NaBr.
2. 2.By methylation of sodium phenoxide with dimethyl sulphate or methyl chloride. 2C6H5−ONa(CH3O)2SO2→−Na2SO42C6H5−OCH3.
3. Using diazomethane.

Making anisole

Is anisole soluble in water?

Anisole, also known as anise ether, methoxybenzene methyl phenyl ether, is a colorless liquid with an odor of anise, sweet, naturally present in the tarragon oil, insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, ether, acetone, soluble in benzene.

What is action of following on anisole?

Anisole undergoes bromination with bromine in ethanoic acid, due to activation of benzene ring by the methoxy group para isomer is obtained.

What is action of following on anisole bromine?

Anisole undergoes bromination with bromine in ethanoic acid to form ortho-bromoanisole and para-bromoanisole.

Is anisole a base?

The basic compound p-toluidine alone will react to form the ionic compound, p-toluidinium chloride, which will dissolve in the aqueous layer and is removed. ... The remaining dichloromethane layer now only contains the neutral compound anisole.

How do you convert phenol to anisole?

Complete answer:

(A)Phenol to anisole: First let us see the structures of phenol and anisole. In this what we need to do is replace the H atom from –OH group to CH3. This can be done by first reacting phenol with a base NaOH and then treating it with an alkyl halide like CH3−Br .

Is anisole flammable?

FIRE HAZARDS

* Anisole is a COMBUSTIBLE LIQUID. * Use dry chemical, CO2, water spray, or foam extinguishers.

Which functional group is present in anisole?

Answer: Anisole has Methoxy Fuctional Group..

What happens when anisole reacts with hi?

- Anisole on reaction with HI gains H+ and forms methylphenyl oxonium ion. - Because of resonance, there's some partial double bond character between oxygen and carbon of benzene ring. ... - Hence, anisole reacts with HI to give phenol and methyl iodide.

What happens when anisole is treated with nitrating mixture?

When anisole is nitrated with a mixture of conc. HNO₃ and H₂SO₄ it gives mixture of ortho-Nitroanisole and para-Nitroanisole (major) products.

What Cannot be prepared by Williamson synthesis?

Benzyl p-nitrophenyl ether.

What is action of ch3cl on anisole?

Anisole undergoes Friedel-Crafts alkylation reaction with an alkyl halide in presence of Lewis acid AlCl3 as a catalyst.

What is the formula of acetic acid?

Acetic acid , systematically named ethanoic acid , is an acidic, colourless liquid and organic compound with the chemical formula CH3COOH (also written as CH3CO2H, C2H4O2, or HC2H3O2). Vinegar is no less than 4% acetic acid by volume, making acetic acid the main component of vinegar apart from water.

What happens when anisole reacts with bromine in acetic acid?

The methoxy group present in anisole acts as an electron donating group and it will donate its electron density of the oxygen atom to the benzene ring and thus, the electron density on the benzene ring will increase. Further, this will undergo electrophilic aromatic substitution, resulting in halogenation.

What happens when anisole undergoes bromination give reaction?

Anisole undergoes bromination with bromine in the ethanoic acid even in the absence of iron(III)bromide catalyst. Due to the activation of benzene ring by the methoxy group. Para isomers is obtained in 90% yield.

Which reagent is used in bromination of Methoxybenzene?

For the bromination of methyl phenyl ether, a combination of bromine and Ferric Bromide is used. The presence of alkoxy group in aromatic ethers activates the aromatic ring towards electrophilic substitution reaction.

Is anisole polar or nonpolar?

Normal alkane RI, non-polar column, custom temperature program. References. Notes.

Why is anisole less reactive than phenol?

Anisole is less reactive than phenol towards electrophilic substitution reactions. ... It is because of this extra stability of structures, II-IV through loss of a proton which is responsible for greater reactivity of phenol over anisole.
