Hyaline and elastic cartilage elastic cartilage Elastic cartilage is histologically similar to hyaline cartilage but contains many yellow elastic fibers lying in a solid matrix. These fibers form bundles that appear dark under a microscope. ... These fibers give elastic cartilage great flexibility so that it is able to withstand repeated bending. › wiki › Elastic_cartilage

Elastic cartilage - Wikipedia

is covered by a fibrous layer called perichondrium (= "around cartilage"). In hyaline and elastic cartilage the perichondrium carries the blood vessels of the cartilage. ... White fibrocartilage blends with the surrounding fibrous tissue, and therefore does not have perichondrium.

Why perichondrium is absent in articular cartilage?

Cartilage is devoid of blood vessels. ... Hyaline and elastic cartilage are surrounded by a connective tissue capsule called the PERICHONDRIUM that contains the capillaries from which the nutrients diffuse into the cartilage matrix. Articular hyaline cartilage and fibrocartilage do not have a perichondrium.

What does perichondrium do for cartilage?

The perichondrium consists of an outer fibrous layer that contains fibroblasts and an inner chondrogenic layer that contains chondroblasts. The main functions of the perichondrium are to protect bones from injury and damage, nourish cartilage through blood vessels, and facilitate cartilage growth.

What type of cartilage has perichondrium?

In elastic cartilage, the chondrocytes are found in a threadlike network of elastic fibres within the matrix. Elastic cartilage provides strength, and elasticity, and maintains the shape of certain structure such as the external ear. It has a perichondrium. This is a diagram of elastic cartilage.

What cartilage has no identifiable perichondrium?

Fibrocartilage is intermediate in appearance between dense connective tissue and hyaline cartilage. Chondrocytes are situated in lacunae and no identifiable perichondrium is present.

Assertion : Perichondrium in white fibrous cartilage is absent. Reason : Perichondrium

Which is the weakest cartilage?

Hyaline cartilage appears slightly glassy under a microscope. This cartilage type has many thin collagen fibers that help to give it strength. However, hyaline cartilage is considered the weakest of the three cartilage types.

What is the function of fibrocartilage?

Fibrocartilage provides the tough material of the intervertebral discs; the intraarticular cartilages of the knee, wrist and temporo-mandibular joints; the articular cartilage of the temporo-mandibular joint and of the joint between the clavicle and the sternum.

What is the difference between the 3 types of cartilage?

There are three different types of cartilage: elastic (A), hyaline (B), and fibrous (C). In elastic cartilage, the cells are closer together creating less intercellular space. Elastic cartilage is found in the external ear flaps and in parts of the larynx. ... Fibrous cartilage is found in the spine and the menisci.

What does fibrocartilage look like?

It is a glossy blue-white in appearance and very resilient. Fibrocartilage is the tough, very strong tissue found predominantly in the intervertebral disks and at the insertions of ligaments and tendons; it is similar to other fibrous tissues but contains cartilage ground substance and chondrocytes.

What are the 3 types of cartilage?

There are three types of cartilage: hyaline, fibrous, and elastic cartilage.

• Hyaline cartilage is the most widespread type and resembles glass. ...
• Fibrous cartilage has many collagen fibers and is found in the intervertebral discs and pubic symphysis.

Which cartilage is strongest cartilage of the body?

You can find elastic cartilage in your ears and your larynx. Fibrocartilage contains even more collagen fibers than hyaline cartilage. It's the most rigid type of cartilage and can be found in intervertebral discs in the spine. It's also the strongest type of cartilage.

Is lamellae present in cartilage?

Cartilage and Bone: Types of mature bone

The osteocytes sit in their lacunae in concentric rings around a central Haversian canal (which runs longitudinally). The osteocytes are arranged in concentric rings of bone matrix called lamellae (little plates), and their processes run in interconnecting canaliculi.

What creates cartilage?

Cartilage a strong and smooth substance made up of “chondrocytes,” or specialized cartilage cells, that produce a matrix of collagen, proteoglycans (a special type of protein) and other non-collagenous proteins. These materials help cartilage attract water and give it its shape and specific properties.

Does cartilage heal quickly?

Cartilage is a flexible connective tissue that differs from bone in several ways; it is avascular and its microarchitecture is less organized than bone. Cartilage is not innervated and therefore relies on diffusion to obtain nutrients. This causes it to heal very slowly.

Why does fibrocartilage take so long to heal?

The matrix of cartilage consists of fibrous tissue and various combinations of proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans. ... This layer is not efficient at regenerating cartilage. Hence, its recovery is slow after injury. The lack of active blood flow is the major reason any injury to cartilage takes a long time to heal.

Which type of cartilage is highly vascular?

Which type of cartilage is highly vascular? Hyaline cartilage is characterized by a glassy matrix. Elastic cartilage has elastic fibers in the matrix. Fibrocartilage has thick bundles of collagen fibers in the matrix.

Why is fibrocartilage the strongest?

Fibrous cartilage is the strongest cartilarge of our body, It is hard because the Matrix contains anormous amount of White collagen fibers which provides high tensile strength. It is present in between the vertebrae in form of intervertebral discs.

Is fibrocartilage found in the ear?

Specialized Forms of Cartilage

Elastic cartilage supports structures subjected to frequent deformation, including the larynx, epiglottis, and external ear. Fibrocartilage has features of both dense connective tissue (an abundance of thick collagen fibers) and cartilage (a prominent glycosaminoglycan matrix).

What is a major characteristic of fibrocartilage?

A major characteristic of fibrocartilage is its unique amount of flexibility and elasticity. Functions of connective tissues include binding, support, insulation, and protection. Cartilage tissue tends to heal less rapidly than bone tissue.

What are the 3 functions of cartilage?

The most important functions of cartilage include:

• Cartilage gives shape, support, and structure to other body tissues.
• It also helps to cushion joints.
• Cartilage also smoothens the bone surfaces at the joints.
• It is essential for the development and growth of long bones.

How do you increase cartilage in joints naturally?

Foods that Help Rebuild Cartilage

1. Legumes. For optimal joint function, it is important to beat inflammation wherever possible—inflammation is the primary source of collagen and, by extension, cartilage breakdown. ...
2. Oranges. ...
3. Pomegranates. ...

What cells make up fibrocartilage?

Fibrocartilage is a specialized form of connective tissue in which the ground substance is cartilage. The fibrous and cartilaginous components render this tissue extremely tough and resilient. The cell types found in this connective tissue include both fibroblasts/cytes and chondroblasts/cytes.

What is the structure of fibrocartilage?

Fibrocartilage consists of a mixture of white fibrous tissue and cartilaginous tissue in various proportions. It owes its inflexibility and toughness to the former of these constituents, and its elasticity to the latter. It is the only type of cartilage that contains type I collagen in addition to the normal type II.
