A few weeks after the Goupy No. 1 flew, Hans Grade's triplane became the first German-built aeroplane to fly.

Why did planes have 3 wings?

In theory, the shorter the fuselage was, the quicker the maneuverability would be in pitch and yaw. Dividing the wing area into three parts also allowed the wings to be constructed with a shorter span, which increased the rate of roll. Smith also designed it with ailerons on all three wings to increase maneuverability.

Who built the Fokker triplane?

2 and R.E.8) the S.E. 5 was inherently stable, making it an excellent gunnery platform, but it was also quite manoeuvrable. It was one of the fastest aircraft of the war at 138 mph (222 km/h), equal at least in speed to the SPAD S. XIII and faster than any standard German type of the period.

Why did ww1 planes have 2 wings?

The main spar was too thin and would have been prone to bending if it had had to support the whole weight of the aircraft in a single span. Only by using two wings, the upper as the compression member and the other as the tension member of a truss, the needed strength was possible.
