The prefrontal cortex can be divided into several subregions. The method of anatomically subdividing the prefrontal cortex varies depending on the source, but common demarcations include the dorsolateral, dorsomedial, ventrolateral, ventromedial, and orbitofrontal regions.

What are the subdivisions of the prefrontal cortex?

The PFC can be divided into two broad regions, each with a different function: the lateral PFC (dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex) and the ventromedial PFC (also known as the orbitofrontal PFC).

What is the prefrontal cortex quizlet?

The prefrontal cortex is responsible for personality expression and the planning of complex cognitive behaviors. The premotor and motor areas contain nerves that control the execution of voluntary muscle movement.

What does the prefrontal cortex specialize in?

The prefrontal cortex performs functions of cognitive control, and is prominently – though not exclusively – involved in working memory organization via central executive processes.

What functions is the prefrontal cortex involved in quizlet?

Region of the prefrontal cortex that is especially interconnected with brain regions involved with attention, cognition, and action. Major functions are working memory and executive control.

2-Minute Neuroscience: Prefrontal Cortex

Does the prefrontal cortex deal with memory?

A prominent account of prefrontal cortex (PFC) function is that single neurons within the PFC maintain representations of task-relevant stimuli in working memory. ... This persistent activity has been interpreted as evidence for the encoding of the stimulus itself in working memory.

Does the prefrontal cortex control decision making?

The most important function of the prefrontal cortex is the executive function. ... Although the prefrontal contribution to decision-making has been examined using a variety of behavioral tasks, recent studies using fMRI have shown that the prefrontal cortex participates in decision-making under free-choice conditions.

At what age is the prefrontal cortex fully developed?

The development and maturation of the prefrontal cortex occurs primarily during adolescence and is fully accomplished at the age of 25 years. The development of the prefrontal cortex is very important for complex behavioral performance, as this region of the brain helps accomplish executive brain functions.

What are the major areas of the prefrontal cortex?

The prefrontal cortex is profusely connected with many other parts of the brain, notably limbic formations and cortical regions of the parietal and temporal lobes. It has two major anatomical and functional subdivisions: the orbitomedial and the dorsolateral prefrontal regions.

What can damage the prefrontal cortex?

A variety of conditions can damage the frontal lobe, including stroke, head trauma, and dementia.

What part of your brain helps you remember things?

The main parts of the brain involved with memory are the amygdala, the hippocampus, the cerebellum, and the prefrontal cortex ([link]). The amygdala is involved in fear and fear memories. The hippocampus is associated with declarative and episodic memory as well as recognition memory.

What part of the cerebral cortex is responsible for personality?

The frontal lobe is responsible for initiating and coordinating motor movements; higher cognitive skills, such as problem solving, thinking, planning, and organizing; and for many aspects of personality and emotional makeup. The parietal lobe is involved with sensory processes, attention, and language.

What does the limbic system in the brain do *?

The limbic system is the part of the brain involved in our behavioural and emotional responses, especially when it comes to behaviours we need for survival: feeding, reproduction and caring for our young, and fight or flight responses.

How does the prefrontal cortex affect behavior?

The prefrontal cortex also plays a big role in personality development. It helps people make conscious decisions according to their motivations. Over time, this can lead to certain tendencies in behavior, such as a person acting friendly toward others because they want to be popular.

How do you activate the prefrontal cortex?

1. Games: Word games, memory games, and puzzles are effective ways to strengthen your prefrontal cortex. ...
2. Learning: Learning something new, like a language, instrument, or other skill, is even more effective than word games at enhancing your prefrontal cortex.

Is the amygdala in the prefrontal cortex?

Another important brain structure involved in the stress response system is called the amygdala. ... The amygdala shares a special connection with another part of the brain called the prefrontal cortex.

Is the prefrontal cortex part of the neocortex?

Further subdivisions or areas of neocortex are responsible for more specific cognitive processes. In humans, the frontal lobe contains areas devoted to abilities that are enhanced in or unique to our species, such as complex language processing localized to the ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (Broca's area).

Does the prefrontal cortex control emotion?

The prefrontal cortex is like a control center, helping to guide our actions, and therefore, this area is also involved during emotion regulation. Both the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex are part of the emotion network.

What happens to the prefrontal cortex in early adolescence?

During adolescence, myelination and synaptic pruning in the prefrontal cortex increase s , improving the efficiency of information processing, and neural connections between the prefrontal cortex and other regions of the brain are strengthened. However, this growth takes time and the growth is uneven.

At what age is your brain the sharpest?

• Overall brain processing power and detail memory peaks around age 18. ...
• The ability to learn unfamiliar names peaks at 22. ...
• Peak facial recognition ability occurs around 32. ...
• Concentration abilities peak around age 43.

Can you get smarter after 25?

More than a century since James's influential text, we know that, unfortunately, our brains start to solidify by the age of 25, but that, fortunately, change is still possible after. The key is continuously creating new pathways and connections to break apart stuck neural patterns in the brain.

What happens when the prefrontal cortex is underdeveloped?

Study subjects in whom the activity of the prefrontal cortex was temporarily suppressed could control their emotional impulses less well than normal. ... Their amygdala deep in the brain that is responsible for emotional reactions then becomes extra active.

What part of the prefrontal cortex controls decision-making?

Ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC).

This part of the PFC helps us make decisions based on the bigger picture gathered from connections to the amygdala, temporal lobe, ventral segmental area, olfactory system, and the thalamus.

What are the executive functions of the prefrontal cortex?

Since the prefrontal cortex contributes to higher cognitive functions such as anticipation, judgment, planning, and decision-making, the prefrontal cortex is an important brain structure for performing executive functions.

How does ADHD affect the prefrontal cortex?

Studies have found that ADHD is associated with weaker function and structure of prefrontal cortex (PFC) circuits, especially in the right hemisphere. The prefrontal association cortex plays a crucial role in regulating attention, behavior, and emotion, with the right hemisphere specialized for behavioral inhibition.
