A reflex arc is a neural pathway that controls a reflex. In vertebrates, most sensory neurons do not pass directly into the brain, but synapse in the spinal cord.

Where does the reflex arc begin and end?

The reflex arc is a special type of neural circuit that begins with a sensory neuron at a receptor (e.g., a pain receptor in the fingertip) and ends with a motor neuron at an effector (e.g., a skeletal muscle).

Where does the reflex arc start?

Most reflex arcs involve only three neurons. The stimulus, such as a needle stick, stimulates the pain receptors of the skin, which initiate an impulse in a sensory neuron. This travels to the spinal cord where it passes, by means of a synapse, to a connecting neuron called the relay neuron situated in the spinal cord.

What is the correct path of reflex arc?

The correct pathway of reflex arc is : Sensory stimulus → Dentrite of sensory neuron → Axon of sensory neuron → CNS → Dendrite of motor neuron → Axon of motor neuron → Effector organ.

Does the reflex arc involve the brain?

This quick response is called a reflex, and reflexes occur without conscious thinking or planning, meaning the brain is not involved in them.

What will happen if we don't have reflex action?

Most reflexes don't have to travel up to your brain to be processed, which is why they take place so quickly. A reflex action often involves a very simple nervous pathway called a reflex arc. ... If the reaction is exaggerated or absent, it may indicate a damage to the central nervous system.

What are the 4 types of reflexes?

In our discussion we will examine four major reflexes that are integrated within the spinal cord: the stretch reflex, the Golgi tendon reflex, the withdrawal reflex and the crossed extensor reflex.

What are the 5 steps of the reflex arc?

So the reflex arc consists of these five steps in order-sensor, sensory neuron, control center, motor neuron, and muscle. These five parts work as a relay team to take information up from the sensor to the spinal cord or brain and back down to the muscles.

What are the stages of the reflex arc?

• Receptor in the skin detects a stimulus (the change in temperature).
• Sensory neurone sends impulses to relay neurone .
• Motor neurone sends impulses to effector.
• Effector produces a response (muscle contracts to move hand away).

What is the path of a reflex?

Reflex arcs

Sensory neuron sends electrical impulses to a relay neuron, which is located in the spinal cord of the CNS. Relay neurons connect sensory neurons to motor neurons. Motor neuron sends electrical impulses to an effector. Effector produces a response (muscle contracts to move hand away).

What's the longest nerve in the human body?

• The sciatic nerve is the largest and longest nerve in the human body, originating at the base of the spine and running along the back of each leg into the foot. ...
• The sciatic nerve originates in the lower spine and is responsible for motor and sensory functions of the lower body.

What is reflex arc class 10th?

The reflex arc describes the pathway in which the nerve impulse is carried and the response is generated and shown by the effector organ.

What is a Polysynaptic reflex?

Any reflex with more than one synapse (1), not counting the synapse between neuron and muscle, and hence involving one or more interneurons. In humans, all reflexes except stretch reflexes are polysynaptic.

What is a reflex arc in simple terms?

Reflex arc, neurological and sensory mechanism that controls a reflex, an immediate response to a particular stimulus. ... Three types of neurons are involved in this reflex arc, but a two-neuron arc, in which the receptor makes contact directly with the motor neuron, also occurs.

Why is the reflex arc important?

The reflex arc is essential in producing a quick involuntary response aimed to prevent injury in an individual.

What is reflex arc explain with diagram?

A reflex arc is a simple nervous pathway which is responsible for the sudden reaction known as the reflex action. The afferent/sensory neurons are present in the receptor organ which receive the stimulus. The neuron transmits the sensory information from receptor organ to the spinal cord.

What kind of message will tell the foot to kick the ball?

The somatic nervous system carries messages that control body movements. It is responsible for activities that are under your control, such as waving your hand or kicking a ball.

What is the correct order of steps in a reflex arc quizlet?

Place the following events of a reflex arc in the correct order: 1) motor neuron activation, 2) sensory neuron activation, 3) sensory receptor activation, 4) Information processing, 5) effector response.

Which part of the body controls reflex actions?

The nervous system is the brain, and the spinal cord. That system thinks about things. Now, on the other hand, the endocrine system controls reflexes, and fast actions. This system also controls the hormones.

What muscles are used to produce the patellar tendon reflex?

The knee-jerk reflex, also known as the patellar reflex, is a simple reflex that causes the contraction of the quadriceps muscle when the patellar tendon is stretched. I describe the course of the reflex arc from muscle spindles in the quadriceps muscle to motor neurons that cause movement of the leg.

What is the basis of reflex classification?

Reflexes can also be categorized by the number of synapses they involve (monosynaptic reflex versus polysynaptic reflex) or the relative position of the sensory receptors to the responding muscles (ipsilateral = same side of the body, contralateral = opposite sides of the body).

Which of the following is not part of a reflex arc?

Terms in this set (10) The integrating center is NOT part of the reflex arc. A monosynaptic reflex arc is the simplest type of reflex arc. A contralateral reflex arc has the sensory neuron on one side of the integrating center and the motor neuron on the same side.

What is a human reflex?

A reflex is an involuntary (say: in-VAHL-un-ter-ee), or automatic, action that your body does in response to something — without you even having to think about it. You don't decide to kick your leg, it just kicks. There are many types of reflexes and every healthy person has them.

How can I improve my reflexes?

2. Chill out. ...
3. Eat a lot of spinach and eggs. ...
4. Play more video games (no, really) ...
5. Use your loose change. ...
6. Playing ball. ...
7. Make sure you get enough sleep.
