Corrasion - wearing away of the river bed and banks by the load hitting against them. Attrition - wearing down of the load as the rocks and pebbles hit the river bed and each other, breaking into smaller and more rounded pieces.

What is Corrasion on a coastline?

Corrasion is when waves pick up beach material (e.g. pebbles) and hurl them at the base of a cliff. Abrasion occurs as breaking waves which contain sand and larger fragments erode the shoreline or headland. It is commonly known as the sand paper effect. When waves hit the base of a cliff air is compressed into cracks.

What is Corrasion also known as?

Abrasion: (this is also known as corrasion) - this is where rock fragments are hurled at cliffs by breaking waves, gradually scraping away at the cliff face; the load acts as a grinding tool.

What is wind Corrasion?

(Or wind erosion.) The abrasive action of wind-borne material, especially sand, dust, and ice crystals; a form of weathering. Compare corrosion, erosion.

Where does solution occur in a river?

Solution is when dissolved material is carried by a river. This often happens in areas where the geology is limestone and is dissolved in slightly acidic water. Saltation is when material such as pebbles and gravel that is too heavy to be carried in suspension is bounced along the river by the force of the water.

What is CORRASION? What does CORRASION mean? CORRASION meaning, definition & explanation

What are the 4 types of river erosion?

• Hydraulic action - This is the sheer power of the water as it smashes against the river banks. ...
• Abrasion - When pebbles grind along the river bank and bed in a sand-papering effect.
• Attrition - When rocks that the river is carrying knock against each other.

What slows down a river?

Broader flat channels tend to slow a river down. ... Generally, anything that increases the surface area of the channel, against which the water flows will tend to slow the flow because of the increase in friction. Anything that reduces surface area also reduces the amount of friction and causes faster flow.

What are two types of erosion?

• surface erosion.
• fluvial erosion.
• mass-movement erosion.
• streambank erosion.

How is a waterfall formed?

Often, waterfalls form as streams flow from soft rock to hard rock. This happens both laterally (as a stream flows across the earth) and vertically (as the stream drops in a waterfall). In both cases, the soft rock erodes, leaving a hard ledge over which the stream falls.

What is river Corrasion?

Corrasion - wearing away of the river bed and banks by the load hitting against them. Attrition - wearing down of the load as the rocks and pebbles hit the river bed and each other, breaking into smaller and more rounded pieces.

What are the 3 types of corrosion?

• Uniform Corrosion. ...
• Pitting Corrosion. ...
• Crevice Corrosion. ...
• Intergranular Corrosion. ...
• Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) ...
• Galvanic Corrosion. ...
• Conclusion.

What is solution in a river?

Solution - minerals are dissolved in the water and carried along in solution. Suspension - fine light material is carried along in the water. Saltation - small pebbles and stones are bounced along the river bed. Traction - large boulders and rocks are rolled along the river bed.

What causes wave?

Waves are most commonly caused by wind. Wind-driven waves, or surface waves, are created by the friction between wind and surface water. As wind blows across the surface of the ocean or a lake, the continual disturbance creates a wave crest. ... The gravitational pull of the sun and moon on the earth also causes waves.

What are the three coastal processes?

The three principle marine processes that influence coasts are erosion, transportation and deposition.

What happens during attrition?

Attrition occurs when the workforce dwindles at a company, following a period in which a number of people retire or resign, and are not replaced. A reduction in staff due to attrition is often called a hiring freeze and is seen as a less disruptive way to trim the workforce and reduce payroll than layoffs.

Where does a waterfall start?

Waterfalls are commonly formed in the upper course of a river where lakes flow into valleys in steep mountains. A river sometimes flows over a large step in the rocks that may have been formed by a fault line.

How fast does water fall in a waterfall?

A large raindrop, about one-quarter of an inch across or about the size of a house fly, has terminal fall speeds of about 10 meters per second or about 20 mph.

How long does it take for a waterfall to form?

Without similar protection, the next pool down began to erode, forming a vertical wall between the two—and thus, a waterfall. What's more, Crosby notes, these waterfalls lingered. Each lab-made cascade stuck around for about 20 minutes, a period of time that represents 10 to 10,000 years, according to the study.

What are 5 types of erosion?

Liquid water is the major agent of erosion on Earth. Rain, rivers, floods, lakes, and the ocean carry away bits of soil and sand and slowly wash away the sediment. Rainfall produces four types of soil erosion: splash erosion, sheet erosion, rill erosion, and gully erosion.

What is water erosion and its types?

Water erosion is the removal of the top layer of land by water from irrigation, rainfall, snowmelt, runoff, and poor irrigation management. ... The eroded soil material can either form a new soil or move to water reservoirs nearby (lakes, streams, etc.).

What is an example of erosion?

Some of the most famous examples of erosion include the Grand Canyon, which was worn away over the course of tens of millions of years by the Colorado River with the help of winds whipping through the formed canyon; the Rocky Mountains in Colorado have also been the subject of intense geological study, with some ...

What happens if a river slows down?

When a stream or river slows down, it starts dropping its sediments. Larger sediments are dropped in steep areas. Some smaller sediments can still be carried by a slow moving stream or river. Smaller sediments are dropped as the slope becomes less steep.

What is the load of a river?

Gravel and sand is dragged, rolled and bounced along the bottom of the river. This is called the bed load. Finer sand and mud that is supported by the water column is called the suspended load. Some minerals are dissolved in the water. These minerals form the river's solution load.

What is the fastest flow of a river called?

Meander: a bend in a river. The outside of the meander has the fastest flow and deepest water.
