During the 1860s the shells fired by a range of weapons began to be filled with an explosive known as 'gun cotton' (nitro-cellulose). This was exactly the period of the American Civil War, and the use of the gun cotton is one of the many reasons why the conflict can be seen as the first 'modern war'.

When were explosives first used?

In 1846 Italian chemist Ascanio Sobrero (1812-1888) invented the first modern explosive, nitroglycerin, by treating glycerin with nitric and sulfuric acids. Sobrero's discovery was, unfortunately for many early users, too unstable to be used safely.

When were explosives first used in Europe?

Originally developed by the Taoists for medicinal purposes, gunpowder was first used for warfare around 904 AD. It spread throughout most parts of Eurasia by the end of the 13th century.

What was the first ever explosive?

It may never be known with certainty who invented the first explosive, black powder, which is a mixture of saltpetre (potassium nitrate), sulfur, and charcoal (carbon). The consensus is that it originated in China in the 10th century, but that its use there was almost exclusively in fireworks and signals.

Who was the first to use gunpowder as a weapon?

The Mongols were the first to be subject to flying fire — an arrow fixed with a tube of gunpowder that ignited and would propel itself across enemy lines. More gunpowder-based weapons were invented by the Chinese and perfected against the Mongols in the next centuries, including the first cannons and grenades.

The history of explosives: Warfare Explored

Did the Chinese invent guns?

Black powder (or gun powder) was invented by China during the 9th century; these inventions were later transmitted to the Middle East and Europe. The direct ancestor of the firearm is the fire lance. The prototype of the fire lance was invented in China during the 10th century and is the predecessor of all firearms.

When did China invent guns?

The first device identified as a gun, a bamboo tube that used gunpowder to fire a spear, appeared in China around AD 1000. The Chinese had previously invented gunpowder in the 9th century.

Can dynamite explode when wet?

Even though the diatomaceous earth takes away some of the dangers of nitroglycerin, there are still problems because the mixture is not stable in damp environments. Water causes the nitroglycerin to leak away. The nitroglycerin can build up, and explode unexpectedly.

Will dynamite explode if you drop it?

Dynamite is nitroglycerine rendered insensitive by mixing it with diatomaceous earth. By design it will not explode upon impact but requires a powerful explosive shock from a blasting cap in order to set it off.

Can dust cause an explosion?

Dust can collect on surfaces such as rafters, roofs, suspended ceilings, ducts, crevices, dust collectors, and other equipment. When the dust is disturbed and under certain circumstances, there is the potential for a serious explosion to occur. The build-up of even a very small amount of dust can cause serious damage.

What did they use before dynamite?

Before dynamite, the ability to break rock was limited to black powder explosives, which weren't very strong and required a lot of material. ... The invention of nitroglycerin in 1846 allowed for stronger and larger explosions, however it was extremely unstable and less safe than black powder.

How was black powder first made?

Originally, gunpowder was made by mixing elemental sulfur, charcoal, and saltpeter (potassium nitrate). ... Incidentally charcoal is not the only fuel that can be used. Sugar is used in many pyrotechnic applications. When the ingredients were carefully ground together, the end result was a powder called 'serpentine.

When did black powder come to Europe?

Black powder was adopted for use in firearms in Europe from the 14th century but was not employed for peaceful purposes, such as mining and road building, until the late 17th century.

What is the most powerful explosive in the world?

One of the most powerful explosive chemicals known to us is PETN, which contains nitro groups which are similar to that in TNT and the nitroglycerin in dynamite. But the presence of more of these nitro groups means it explodes with more power.

What is C4 made of?

C4 is composed of RDX (91%), dioctyl sebacate (5.3%), polyisobutylene (2.1%), and mineral/motor oil (1.6%) [1].

Is dynamite stronger than TNT?

Dynamite is formed into explosive sticks that feature a wick and a blasting cap. ... TNT stands for trinitrotoluene, which is also an explosive but quite different from dynamite. Dynamite is actually much more powerful than TNT.

Can a bullet detonate a grenade?

In such a case, for the bullet to make the grenade explode, it needs to penetrate through the hard outer fragment shell. ... Even if it did reach the detonator, it probably wouldn't have enough kinetic energy to ignite the detonator to light the main charge, which would then result in the main charge explosion.

How big of an explosion is a stick of dynamite?

A stick of dynamite — the basis for comparison used in recent explosions—may commonly be 8 inches long by 1¼ in diameter, weighing a third to a half pound. The force of different varieties may vary 30 to 40 percent, but a properly placed standard stick can blast a 12‐inch tree stump from the ground.

Can a goat explode if it eats dynamite?

Fresh dynamite usually needs something to set it off, like blasting caps with a lit fuse or an electrical charge. ... So if the dynamite eaten by the goat was old, it is possible for an impact to explode the goat.

Is it illegal to make nitroglycerin?

Following the San Francisco explosion, the California legislature banned the transport of liquid nitroglycerin, forcing Central Pacific workers to exclusively use black powder as their only blasting agent. ... At that time there were no local factories producing black powder.

Does dynamite degrade?

8.2.

Dynamite is an explosive material based on NG. Dynamite was invented by Alfred Nobel in 1867 [7]. ... NG by itself is a very strong explosive, and in its pure form it is extremely shock-sensitive, and degrades over time to even more unstable forms.

Who invented ak47?

AK-47 designer and Red Army soldier Mikhail Kalashnikov in 1949. After five years of engineering, the former agricultural engineer made his famous weapon. It was based on a number of other designs floating around at the time, mostly Germany's Sturmgewehr-44.
