The core accretion model Approximately 4.6 billion years ago, the solar system was a cloud of dust and gas known as a solar nebula. Gravity collapsed the material in on itself as it began to spin, forming the sun in the center of the nebula. With the rise of the sun, the remaining material began to clump together.

When did planetary accretion end?

The terrestrial embryos grew to about 0.05 Earth masses ( M _⊕) and ceased accumulating matter about 100,000 years after the formation of the Sun; subsequent collisions and mergers between these planet-sized bodies allowed terrestrial planets to grow to their present sizes (see Terrestrial planets below).

How was planetary accretion formed?

Early on, our Solar System was a disk of dust and gas in orbit around the proto-Sun. The solid materials collided with each other and accreted to form gradually larger bodies, until the Solar System's four terrestrial planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars) were formed.

What is planetary accretion?

In planetary science, accretion is the process in which solids agglomerate to form larger and larger objects and eventually planets are produced. The initial conditions are a disc of gas and microscopic solid particles, with a total mass of about 1% of the gas mass. Accretion has to be effective and fast.

What was happening during the earth's periods of accretion?

During its accretion, Earth is thought to have been shock-heated by the impacts of meteorite-size bodies and larger planetesimals. ... Some scientists have suggested that, in this way, Earth may have become hot enough to begin melting after growing to less than 15 percent of its final volume.

Formation of the Planets

What is wrong with the accretion theory?

Most scientists agree that core accretion is how terrestrial planets such as Earth and Mars were created, but the model can't convincingly explain how gas giant planets like Jupiter and Saturn came to be. One major problem is that developing gas giants through core accretion takes too long.

What struck Earth 4.5 billion years ago?

Scientists have long agreed that the Moon formed when a protoplanet, called Theia, struck Earth in its infancy some 4.5 billion years ago. Now, a team of scientists has a provocative new proposal: Theia's remains can be found in two continent-size layers of rock buried deep in Earth's mantle.

What causes accretion?

The accretion disk forms when diffuse material is attracted to a massive central body, like a black hole. The flattened shape of the accretion disk is due to angular momentum, which dictates the particles' motion as they rotate around the black hole.

What's the opposite of accretion?

Opposite of growth or increase by the gradual accumulation of additional layers or matter. abatement. decline. decrease. decrement.

What is the difference between accretion and condensation?

What is the difference between the processes of condensation and accretion? Condensation is the building of larger particles one atom (or molecule) at a time, whereas accretion is the sticking together of larger particles. ... The planets swept up gas, dust, and small particles.

How was Earth named?

All of the planets, except for Earth, were named after Greek and Roman gods and godesses. The name Earth is an English/German name which simply means the ground. It comes from the Old English words 'eor(th)e' and 'ertha'.

Which planet in our solar system has the greatest number of satellites or moons?

Saturn has overtaken Jupiter as the planet with the most moons, according to US researchers. A team discovered a haul of 20 new moons orbiting the ringed planet, bringing its total to 82; Jupiter, by contrast, has 79 natural satellites.

What is the theory of accretion?

Accretion is the gradual increase in size by the buildup of matter due to gravity. ... It's explained by nebular theory, which describes the forces and processes at play as a nebula spins and accretes into a star and its planets orbiting it.

What does accretion mean in law?

1) in real estate, the increase of the actual land on a stream, lake or sea by the action of water which deposits soil upon the shoreline. ... 2) in estates, when a beneficiary of the person who died gets more of the estate than he/she was meant to because another beneficiary or heir dies or rejects the gift.

How old is Jupiter?

Jupiter was formed at the same time as the rest of the Solar System, from a large spinning disk of gas and dust. Astronomers think that all this happened about 4.6 billion years ago! So Jupiter is about 4.6 billion years old.

How old is the Earth?

Earth is estimated to be 4.54 billion years old, plus or minus about 50 million years. Scientists have scoured the Earth searching for the oldest rocks to radiometrically date. In northwestern Canada, they discovered rocks about 4.03 billion years old.

What does Decretion mean?

Decretionnoun. a decrease. Etymology: [From L. decrescere, decretum. See Decrease.]

What is the opposite of accretion in real estate?

The opposite of accretion, “erosion” is the gradual washing away of land along the shoreline. ... However, the sudden and often very perceptible change to a shoreline by natural forces is referred to as “avulsion.

What is the synonym of accretion?

cumulus, gathering, lodgment. (or lodgement), pileup.

What is an example of accretion?

Accretion is defined as the part of something that has been added. An example of an accretion is the garage someone may build on his home. ... The definition of accretion is the state of having gone through extension or addition of length or overall size.

How long do accretion disks last?

Accretion discs in gamma ray bursts (GRBs)

The duration of GRB prompt emission can last from 0.01 - 2 seconds (short bursts) up to 2 - 500 seconds (long bursts) and may be explained by merging compact objects or failed supernovae (collapsars), respectively.

Where does accretion occur?

Accretion, in geology, is a process by which material is added to a tectonic plate at a subduction zone, frequently on the edge of existing continental landmasses. The added material may be sediment, volcanic arcs, seamounts, oceanic crust or other igneous features.

Where is Theia now?

A new study led by Qian Yuan, a geodynamics researcher at Arizona State University (ASU), Tempe, suggests that the remnants of Theia is still inside Earth, probably located in two continent-size layers of rock beneath West Africa and the Pacific Ocean. Seismologists have been studying these two rock layers for decades.

How close was the Moon a billion years ago?

Sediments from China suggest that 1.4 billion years ago the Earth-moon distance was 341,000km (its current distance is 384,000km).

Can the Moon crash into Earth?

The Moon will swing ever closer to Earth until it reaches a point 11,470 miles (18,470 kilometers) above our planet, a point termed the Roche limit. "Reaching the Roche limit means that the gravity holding it [the Moon] together is weaker than the tidal forces acting to pull it apart," Willson said.
