Nobelium is a synthetic chemical element with the symbol No and atomic number 102. It is named in honor of Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite and benefactor of science. A radioactive metal, it is the tenth transuranic element and is the penultimate member of the actinide series.

What is nobelium used in?

Nobelium has no uses outside research. Nobelium has no known biological role. It is toxic due to its radioactivity. Nobelium is made by bombarding curium with carbon in a device called a cyclotron.

Where is nobelium naturally found?

Source: Nobelium is a synthetic element and is not found naturally. Nobelium is created by nuclear bombardment, and has only been produced in miniscule amounts. Nobelium can be produced by irradiating a californium-249 target with carbon-12 ions.

When and where was nobelium found?

Word Origin: Nobelium is named after Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite. Discovery: The element was officially discovered in April 1958 in Berkeley, California, by Albert Ghiorso, Glenn Seaborg, Torbørn Sikkeland and John R. Walton.

How was nobelium formed?

Nobelium was originally synthesised by a team at the Nobel Institute of Physics in Stockhlom, Sweden in 1957. They made an isotope of this element by bombarding curium-244 with carbon-13 ions in a cyclotron. The isotope they created was short-lived; it had a half-life of just 10 minutes.

Why is nobelium the only actinoid?

Nobelium is the only known f-block element for which the +2 state is the most common and stable one in aqueous solution. This occurs because of the large energy gap between the 5f and 6d orbitals at the end of the actinide series.

Can nobelium be found in nature?

Nobelium (No), synthetic chemical element of the actinoid series of the periodic table, atomic number 102. The element was named after Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel. Not occurring in nature, nobelium was first claimed by an international team of scientists working at the Nobel Institute of Physics in Stockholm in 1957.

What has an atomic number of 100?

Fermium (Fm), synthetic chemical element of the actinoid series of the periodic table, atomic number 100.

Is nobelium found in the earth's crust?

Nobelium doesn't occur naturally, it has not yet been found in the earth's crust and it's so unstable that any amount formed would decompose to other elements very quickly.

Is nobelium harmful to humans?

Nobelium does not occur naturally and because it is unstable, it would quickly decompose to other elements. Thus, it is not considered a health hazard. It is a toxic element due to its radioactivity and has no biological role.

Which is the rarest element on the Earth?

A team of researchers using the ISOLDE nuclear-physics facility at CERN has measured for the first time the so-called electron affinity of the chemical element astatine, the rarest naturally occurring element on Earth.

What are the properties of nobelium?

• Atomic Mass Average: 259.
• Boiling Point:
• Coefficient of lineal thermal expansion/K^-1: N/A.
• Conductivity Electrical: Thermal: 0.1 W/cmK.
• Description: A radioactive metal that does not occur in nature.
• Flammablity Class:
• Freezing Point: see melting point.
• Heat of Vaporization: kJ/mol.

What is helium natural or synthetic?

Helium is all over the universe—it's the second-most abundant element. But on Earth, it's much less common. It can't be artificially produced and must be extracted from natural gas wells.

How do we find atomic mass?

For any given isotope, the sum of the numbers of protons and neutrons in the nucleus is called the mass number. This is because each proton and each neutron weigh one atomic mass unit (amu). By adding together the number of protons and neutrons and multiplying by 1 amu, you can calculate the mass of the atom.

What is the half life of nobelium 259?

Today, the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory is known as the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory. Nobelium's most stable isotope, nobelium-259, has a half-life of about 58 minutes. It decays into fermium-255 through alpha decay, into mendelevium-259 through electron capture or through spontaneous fission.

What is the difference between natural and synthetic elements?

The difference between a synthetic element and a natural element is that natural elements can be found naturally occuring in the universe, whereas synthetic elements have to be synthesized/made by humans to get access to that element.
