Dysprosium is the chemical element with the symbol Dy and atomic number 66. It is a rare-earth element with a metallic silver luster. Dysprosium is never found in nature as a free element, though it is found in various minerals, such as xenotime.

Where is dysprosium found?

In common with many other lanthanides, dysprosium is found in the minerals monazite and bastnaesite. It is also found in smaller quantities in several other minerals such as xenotime and fergusonite. It can be extracted from these minerals by ion exchange and solvent extraction.

Where is dysprosium most commonly found?

Dysprosium is chiefly obtained from bastnasite and monazite, where it occurs as an impurity. Other dysprosium-bearing minerals include euxenite, fergusonite, gadolinite and polycrase. It is mined in the USA, China Russia, Australia, and India.

Is dysprosium hard to find?

Dysprosium gets its name from the Greek element dysprositos, meaning 'hard to get'. This is because like most lanthanoids, or rare earth elements, it is found in a mineral deposit tightly bound to various other lanthanoids.

How common is dysprosium on earth?

The abundance of dysprosium is 5.2 mg/kg in the Earth's crust and 0.9 ng/L in sea water. Natural element 66 consists of a mixture of seven stable isotopes. The most abundant is Dy-154 (28%). Twenty-nine radioisotopes have been synthesized, plus there are at least 11 metastable isomers.

Is dysprosium man made?

Dysprosium is never found in nature as a free element, though it is found in various minerals, such as xenotime. Naturally occurring dysprosium is composed of seven isotopes, the most abundant of which is ¹⁶⁴Dy.

What does dysprosium look like?

Dysprosium is a bright, soft, silvery-white, rare earth metal. It tarnishes slowly in air at room temperature and dissolves in both dilute and concentrated acids.

What's the cost of dysprosium?

It is forecast that the price of dysprosium oxide be 440 U.S. dollars per kilogram in 2030. In 2020 the price of dysprosium oxide was 260 U.S. dollars per kilogram.

What is made from dysprosium?

Dysprosium is used in nuclear reactors as a cermet, a composite material made of ceramic and sintered metal, to make laser materials, nuclear reactor control rods, as sources of infrared radiation for studying chemical reactions.

What is an interesting fact about dysprosium?

Discovery: Dysprosium was discovered in 1886 by French chemist Paul-Émile Lecoq de Boisbaudran, but he was not able to isolate it. It was not isolated until 1950, when Canadian scientist Frank Spedding and his team developed ion-exchange separation and metallographic reduction techniques.

How is dysprosium used in technology?

Dysprosium in Terfenol-D, is used to produce sonar sensors, positioning actuators, active noise and vibration cancellation, seismic waves, and tool machining. Dysprosium phosphide (DyP) is a semiconductor used in laser diodes and high power, high-frequency applications.

Why is dysprosium expensive?

“Dysprosium, one of the most expensive heavy rare-earth elements, is used in neodymium sintered magnets to improve temperature resistance,” the company stated in a media release. “However, it is supplied from a single-country source, thus creating supply shortages and high prices as demand increases.

How is dysprosium processed?

Pure samples of dysprosium were first produced in the 1950s. Today, dysprosium is primarily obtained through an ion exchange process from monazite sand ((Ce, La, Th, Nd, Y)PO₄), a material rich in rare earth elements. ... When combined with vanadium and other rare earth elements, dysprosium is used as a laser material.

Is dysprosium poisonous or hazardous?

Soluble dysprosium salts, such as dysprosium chloride and dysprosium nitrate, are mildly toxic when ingested. The insoluble salts, however, are non-toxic. Based on the toxicity of dysprosium chloride to mice, it is estimated that the ingestion of 500 g or more could be fatal to a human.

What reacts with dysprosium?

Dysprosium metal reacts with all the halogens to form dysprosium(III) halides. So, it reacts with fluorine, F₂, chlorine, Cl₂, bromine, I₂, and iodine, I₂, to form respectively dysprosium(III) bromide, DyF₃, dysprosium(III) chloride, DyCl₃, dysprosium(III) bromide, DyBr₃, and dysprosium(III) iodide, DyI₃.

How did hafnium get its name?

The element is number 72 in the periodic table, and is called hafnium. It takes its name from hafnium, the old Latin name for Copenhagen which is the city in which it was first isolated in 1922.

What are rare earths worth?

Rare Earth Elements Market Worth $5.62 Billion By 2025 | CAGR 10.4%

Is Rare earth a commodity?

Handwerger says he told his readers for over a decade that China recognized rare earths as the “strategic commodity over the next generation similar to oil.” He sees a “huge jump in prices coming” as China uses rare earths as a weapon. ... Rare earths are used in many defense and commercial applications.

Is dysprosium used in cell phones?

Smartphones are made up of around 30 elements, including copper, gold and silver for wiring and lithium and cobalt in the battery. The bright colours of the display are produced by small amounts of rare earth elements, including yttrium, terbium and dysprosium.

Is dysprosium highly reactive?

Like most metals, dysprosium is a reactive, silvery-white metal that it is soft enough to cut with a knife.

Why is dysprosium used in phones?

Of the 17 rare Earth metals, 16 are included in phones. Neodymium, terbium and dysprosium, for example, are three of the rare Earth metals: they give your phone the power to vibrate, so smartphones could be made without them – but you'd have to rely on your ringtone.
