The term hemolysis designates the pathological process of breakdown of red blood cells in blood, which is typically accompanied by varying degrees of red tinge in serum or plasma once the whole blood specimen has been centrifuged.

What color would a Hemolyzed specimen be?

Hemolysis presence in serum or plasma specimens can be visually identified as a pink to red color, when hemoglobin concentrations are > 0.2 g/dL [88].

What happens when a blood sample is Hemolyzed?

"Hemo" means blood, of course; "lysis" means to rupture or the destruction of cells. So hemolysis is literally the destruction of blood cells, specifically red blood cells. When red cells rupture, they spill their contents, mostly hemoglobin, into their surroundings.

What causes Hemolyzed sample?

Most causes of in vitro hemolysis are related to specimen collection. Difficult collections, unsecure line connections, contamination, and incorrect needle size, as well as improper tube mixing and incorrectly filled tubes are all frequent causes of hemolysis.

How does Hemolyzed specimen affects the test result?

Certain lab tests can be affected and the reported results will be inaccurate. It falsely decreases values such as RBC's, HCT, and aPTT. It can also falsely elevate potassium, ammonia, magnesium, phosphorus, AST, ALT, LDH and PT.

Preventing Hemolysis in the Blood Samples You Draw

What does specimen hemolyzed mean?

The term hemolysis designates the pathological process of breakdown of red blood cells in blood, which is typically accompanied by varying degrees of red tinge in serum or plasma once the whole blood specimen has been centrifuged.

Why is hemolyzed sample not accepted?

Serum/plasma samples submitted for potassium measurement are quite frequently rejected for analysis because they show the telltale signal of hemolysis, i.e. a reddish discoloration due to the presence of hemoglobin. ...

How can you prevent a Hemolyzed sample?

1. Use the correct needle size for blood collection (20-22 gauge).
2. Avoid using butterfly needles, unless specifically requested by patient.
3. Warm up the venipuncture site to increase blood flow.
4. Allow disinfectant on venipuncture site to dry completely.

How is hemolysis treated?

Treatments for hemolytic anemia include blood transfusions, medicines, plasmapheresis (PLAZ-meh-feh-RE-sis), surgery, blood and marrow stem cell transplants, and lifestyle changes. People who have mild hemolytic anemia may not need treatment, as long as the condition doesn't worsen.

Is hemolysis good or bad?

The result is an extremely fast destruction of red blood cells, which can be lethal. This is why healthcare providers need to carefully check blood types before giving blood. Some causes of hemolytic anemia are temporary. Hemolytic anemia may be curable if a doctor can identify the underlying cause and treat it.

What is hemolysis and why does it occur?

Hemolysis is the destruction of red blood cells. Hemolysis can occur due to different causes and leads to the release of hemoglobin into the bloodstream. Normal red blood cells (erythrocytes) have a lifespan of about 120 days. After they die they break down and are removed from the circulation by the spleen.

How can a quality blood sample be non Hemolyzed?

1. Mix tubes with anticoagulant additives gently 5-10 times.
2. Avoid drawing blood from a hematoma.
3. Avoid drawing the plunger back too forcefully, if using a needle and syringe, or too small a needle, and avoid frothing of the sample.

Which test is most affected by hemolysis?

Conclusion. We conclude that hemolysis affects plasma concentration of a whole range of biochemical parameters, whereas the most prominent effect of hemolysis is observed for AST, LD, potassium and total bilirubin.

How is hemolysis diagnosed?

Diagnosis of Hemolytic Anemia. Hemolysis is suspected in patients with anemia and reticulocytosis. If hemolysis is suspected, a peripheral smear is examined and serum bilirubin, LDH, haptoglobin, and ALT are measured. The peripheral smear and reticulocyte count are the most important tests to diagnose hemolysis.

Does hemolysis cause iron deficiency?

Blood loss from the kidneys or bladder. Frequent blood donations. Intravascular hemolysis, a condition in which red blood cells break down in the blood stream, releasing iron that is then lost in the urine.

How serious is hemolytic anemia?

Severe hemolytic anemia can cause chills, fever, pain in the back and abdomen, or shock. Severe hemolytic anemia that is not treated or controlled can lead to serious complications, such as irregular heart rhythms called arrhythmias; cardiomyopathy, in which the heart grows larger than normal; or heart failure.

Can a CBC be Hemolyzed?

Conclusion. The results show that the hemolysis phenomenon of CBC has a significant impact on routine blood testing.

What causes high haemolysis index?

The test shows whether your bone marrow is making red blood cells at the correct rate. People who have hemolytic anemia usually have high reticulocyte counts because their bone marrow is working hard to replace the destroyed red blood cells.

What color is Icteric serum?

Icteric serum or plasma varies in color from dark to bright yellow, rather than the normal straw color.

What is the most common cause of specimen rejection in laboratories?

The most common reasons for specimen rejection were contamination (n=764, 35.1%), inappropriate collection container/tube (n=330, 15.2%), quantity not sufficient (QNS) (n=329, 15.1%), labeling errors (n=321, 14.7%), hemolyzed specimen (n=205, 9.4%), and clotted specimen (n=203, 9.3%).

What is a normal hemolysis level?

Haptoglobin is an acute-phase reactant whose principal clinical utility is in defining conditions of hemolysis. levels can also become elevated in infection and inflammation. The reference ranges for haptoglobin are as follows : Adult: 50-220 mg/dL or 0.5-2.2 g/L (SI units) Newborn: 0-10 mg/dL or 0-0.1 g/L (SI units)

What labs does hemolysis affect?

Potassium, aspartate transaminase (AST), amylase, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, total protein, and total and direct bilirubin showed significant changes caused by hemolysis.

How does hemolysis affect CBC?

Specifically, hemolysis is present if the free hemoglobin is greater than 0.3 g/L. 1 The effect on the complete blood count (CBC) results due to red cell destruction inaccurately decreases the red blood cell (RBC) count and the hematocrit (when calculated), while the hemoglobin (Hgb) and MCV values remain the same.

Why should you not collect blood from a burned area?

Areas to Avoid When Choosing a Site for Blood Draw:

Extensive scars from burns and surgery - it is difficult to puncture the scar tissue and obtain a specimen. The upper extremity on the side of a previous mastectomy - test results may be affected because of lymphedema. Hematoma - may cause erroneous test results.
