Mutually Exclusive Projects is the term which is used generally in the capital budgeting process where the companies choose a single project on the basis of certain parameters out of the set of the projects where acceptance of one project will lead to rejection of the other projects.

How do you choose between mutually exclusive projects?

1. Independent projects: If NPV is greater than $0, accept the project.
2. Mutually exclusive projects: If the NPV of one project is greater than the NPV of the other project, accept the project with the higher NPV. If both projects have a negative NPV, reject both projects.

What does it mean if projects are mutually exclusive?

Mutually exclusive projects are capital projects which compete directly with each other. For example, if a manager has to make a choice strictly between undertaking either project X or Y, but not both of them concurrently, then projects X and Y are said to be mutually exclusive.

What is the difference between independent and mutually exclusive projects?

What is the difference between independent and mutually exclusive projects? Independent projects: if the cash flows of one are unaffected by the acceptance of the other. ... If projects are mutually exclusive, accept projects with the highest positive NPV, those that add the most value.

How should managers rank mutually exclusive projects?

How should managers rank mutually exclusive projects? A mutually exclusive project is a project that if accepted, the company cannot accept any other projects during that time. Mangers should rank them starting with the highest NPV.

What condition regarding cash flows would cause more than one IRR to exist?

If market conditions change over the years, this project can have multiple IRRs. In other words, long projects with fluctuating cash flows and additional investments of capital may have multiple distinct IRR values.

How are project classifications used in capital budgeting process?

Project classifications are used to indicate how much analysis is required to evaluate a given project, the level of executive who must approve the project, and the cost of capital that should be used to calculate the project's NPV.

What is an example of mutually exclusive?

Mutually exclusive events are events that can not happen at the same time. Examples include: right and left hand turns, even and odd numbers on a die, winning and losing a game, or running and walking. Non-mutually exclusive events are events that can happen at the same time.

How do you use not mutually exclusive in a sentence?

If you want an example sentence: "Mr. President, will you now watch television, call the secretary of defense, or cut your toenails?" asked Joe Biden. "I might do two of those things at once: those choices are not mutually exclusive!" said the president.

What does the two are not mutually exclusive mean?

If two events are mutually exclusive, it means that they cannot occur at the same time. ... Rain and sunshine are not mutually exclusive (that is, they can occur together), as shown by this image of a sunshower.

What does it mean if something isn't mutually exclusive?

What is an example of an independent event?

Independent events are those events whose occurrence is not dependent on any other event. For example, if we flip a coin in the air and get the outcome as Head, then again if we flip the coin but this time we get the outcome as Tail. In both cases, the occurrence of both events is independent of each other.

How do you know if mutually exclusive?

Mutually Exclusive Events

If two events are disjoint, then the probability of them both occurring at the same time is 0. If two events are mutually exclusive, then the probability of either occurring is the sum of the probabilities of each occurring.

Can two events be mutually exclusive and independent?

If two events are mutually exclusive then they do not occur simultaneously, hence they are not independent. Yes, there is relationship between mutually exclusive events and independent events.

What does it mean to be mutually independent?

A finite set of events is mutually independent if every event is independent of any intersection of the other events.

Are all mutually exclusive events dependent?

No, mutually exclusive events (the events with non-zero probability) are always dependent. The definition of independence for events R and Q says that P(R and Q) = P(R) P (Q). ... Disjoint or mutually exclusive events are always dependent since if one event occurs we already know the other one cannot happen.

How do you solve mutually exclusive and not mutually exclusive events?

If they are mutually exclusive (they can't occur together), then the (U)nion of the two events must be the sum of both, i.e. 0.20 + 0.35 = 0.55. In our example, 0.55 does not equal 0.51, so the events are not mutually exclusive.

How do you find non mutually exclusive events?

Non-mutually-exclusive means that some overlap exists between the two events in question and the formula compensates for this by subtracting the probability of the overlap, P(Y and Z), from the sum of the probabilities of Y and Z.

What are 2 examples of independent events?

Definition: Two events, A and B, are independent if the fact that A occurs does not affect the probability of B occurring. Some other examples of independent events are: Landing on heads after tossing a coin AND rolling a 5 on a single 6-sided die. Choosing a marble from a jar AND landing on heads after tossing a coin.

What are some real life examples of dependent and independent events?

Winning a card game and running out of bread. Finding a dollar on the street and buying a lottery ticket; finding a dollar isn't dictated by buying a lottery ticket, nor does buying the ticket increase your chances of finding a dollar. Growing the perfect tomato and owning a cat.

What does it mean when a and b are independent?

Independent Events:

Two events A and B are said to be independent if the fact that one event has occurred does not affect the probability that the other event will occur. If whether or not one event occurs does affect the probability that the other event will occur, then the two events are said to be dependent.
