High inrush currents drawn by induction motor during starting can result in large dip in connected bus voltages. This dip in bus voltages can impact the performance of other motors operating on the bus. Voltage dips during starting of large motors can trip some of the motors operating on the same bus.

Under which of starting method an induction motor draws high starting current?

Direct on Line Starting Method

The motor at the time of starting draws very high starting current (about 5 to 7 times the full load current) for the very short duration.

What is the effect of loading on induction motor?

1. The efficiency of the induction increases when the mechanical load increases because as the motors load increases, its slip increases, and the rotor speed falls. Since the rotor speed is slower, there is more relative motion between the rotor and the stator magnetic fields in the machine.

How can the starting current of an induction motor be reduced?

To compensate for the reactive power during starting then a parallel capacitor bank can be used with the motor, either star of delta connected. The capacitances can be calculated for the starting transient and disconnected when the machine has run up to speed. This will help reduce the starting current.

Why a certain running motor draws a high current?

Electrical overload or over-current is caused by an excessive current flow within the motor windings, exceeding the design current which the motor is able to carry efficiently and safely. This can be caused by a low supply voltage, resulting in the motor drawing in more current in an attempt to maintain its torque.

Starting Current of Induction Motor

What 3 things are needed for an induction motor to work?

A 3-phase induction motor includes two essential components namely the stator & the rotor. In this motor, the stationary part is the stator whereas the rotating part is the rotor. In this motor, the load is connected to the shaft. Three-phase armature winding can be wound over the stator.

Which motor is used in tramway?

Dc motor (Ma) and induction motor (Mc) are currently manufactured and used in 105 N tram drive, their parameters are available. Dc motor (Mb), brushless motor (Me) and slip-ring motor (Md) pa- rameters have been determined by analysis.

What are the starting methods of induction motor?

What is the working principle of induction motor?

Working Principle of Induction Motor

The motor which works on the principle of electromagnetic induction is known as the induction motor. The electromagnetic induction is the phenomenon in which the electromotive force induces across the electrical conductor when it is placed in a rotating magnetic field.

Why starter is used in induction motor?

⇒ The starter is a device which is basically used to limit the starting current by supplying reduced voltage to the motor at the time of starting. From the expression of rotor current it can be seen that the current at start can be controlled by : By reducing the supply voltage at the time starting.

What is effect of load on 3 phase induction motor?

As the load is increased the rotor speed is slightly reduced. The emf induced in the rotor causes the current increased to produce higher torque, untill the torque developed is equal to torque required by load on motor. CIRCUIT DIAGRAM : The circuit diagram of load test on 3 phase squirrel cage induction motor.

What is no load test of induction motor?

The no-load test approximates the stator circuit (Rs and Xs1) and magnetization branch parameters(Xm) of an induction machine. The machine is brought to its rated speed by applying rated three phase volt- age at the stator (Vnl). Corresponding no-load current (Inl) and no-load real power input(Pnl) are recorded.

Why no load test is performed in induction motor?

As the name suggest no load test is performed when rotor rotates with synchronous speed and there is no load torque. ... This test gives the information regarding no-load losses such as core loss, friction loss and windage loss. Rotor copper loss at no load is very less that its value is negligible.

What are the methods of speed control of induction motor?

• By Changing the Applied Voltage.
• By Changing the Applied Frequency.
• Constant V/F Control of Induction Motor.
• Changing the Number of Stator Poles.
• Rotor Rheostat Control.
• Cascade Operation.
• By Injecting EMF In Rotor Circuit.

Which AC motor have high starting torque?

DC Series motors have high starting torque but induction motors have wide range of speed control. So, If DC motor is used, then DC drives you can use, although it will be expensive and DC motors are tough to maintain than ac motors due to commutation Problem.

What are the types of starter?

• Manual Starter.
• Magnetic Starter.
• Direct Online (DOL) Starter.
• Stator Resistance starter.
• Rotor Resistance or Slip Ring Motor Starter.
• Autotransformer Starter.

What is working principle of motor?

A DC motor is an electrical machine which converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. The basic working principle of the DC motor is that whenever a current carrying conductor places in the magnetic field, it experiences a mechanical force.

Where is induction motor used?

These are the most common type of AC motor and are important to industry due to their load capacity, with Single-Phase induction motors being used mainly for smaller loads, for example in household appliances whereas, Three-Phase induction motors are used more in industrial applications including compressors, pumps, ...

Which starter is used in induction motor?

The star delta starter is used for starting of induction motor above 5 H.P. Auto Transformer – The necessity of reduction of starting current to avoid failure of motor can be effectively done by auto transformer which consists of a single winding.

What are the starting method of 3 phase induction motor?

The starting methods of three phase induction motor generally are direct-on-line starting, reduced-voltage starting and soft starter. This kind of starting mode is the most basic and simplest in the motor starting. The method is characterized by less investment, simple equipment and small quantity.

What is 3phase induction motor?

An electric motor converts electrical energy into a mechanical energy which is then supplied to different types of loads. ... A 3 phase induction motor derives its name from the fact that the rotor current is induced by the magnetic field, instead of electrical connections.

Which motor is used for elevator?

Lifts are preferred by AC slip ring or DC compound motor. In case of single phase installation, the commutator motors are preferred. Variable Frequency drive electronic controls are used in the latest lift designs.

Which motor is most suitable for traction?

Many single phase ac motors have been developed for traction purposes but only compensated series type commutator motor is found to be best suited for traction. Single phase induction motors have been abandoned as they are not capable of developing high starting torque.
