Does WSL 1 require Hyper-V?

WSL runs natively as a component of Windows — no virtualization or emulation layer necessary. ... Although I don't know how all that worked out behind the scenes, WSL does not require Hyper-V.

Is WSL a Type 1 hypervisor?

WSL is a type 1 hypervisor VM, that means no compatibility layer between itself and hardware. You are getting 100% of the performance, and it's as close to bare metal a VM can be. VMs like virtualbox are of type 2 hypervisor, this means that there is an additional software layer in between, so slower performance.

Is WSL better than Hyper-V?

The biggest difference between running Ubuntu Linux in a Hyper-V virtual machine versus running the operating system in WSL2 lies in the ability to access the Ubuntu user interface in Hyper-V. ... Depending on your system's hardware performance, you likely found that WSL2 is the faster option.

Hyper-V offers high performance virtual machines, and can output a lot of power depending on the hardware that it is running on.

Can Docker run without Hyper-V?

Docker Desktop on Windows 10 supports two backends: HyperV and WSL2. WSL2 in turn also uses Hyper-V — so without having Hyper-V enabled Docker Desktop fails to start and can't be used. ... When Hyper-V is enabled other (low level) virtualisation engines won't work anymore.

Is WSL2 secure?

WSL 2 is a more secure system than WSL 1 (or the legacy “bash” feature), but it does not eliminate the risks involved in running sensitive applications inside it. To be clear: It is a well-known fact that the “host” system always has full control over the “guest” system.

Can Virtualbox coexist with WSL2?

Yes, WSL2 is not compatible with Virtualbox, due to WSL2 using Hyper-V, which uses VT-x exclusively and doesn't share it with Virtualbox. To use Virtualbox properly, for now*, you have to have Hyper-V off, which turns off anything that uses Hyper-V.

What is a Type 1 hypervisor?

A Type 1 hypervisor runs directly on the underlying computer's physical hardware, interacting directly with its CPU, memory, and physical storage. For this reason, Type 1 hypervisors are also referred to as bare-metal hypervisors. A Type 1 hypervisor takes the place of the host operating system.

Do you need Windows 10 Pro for WSL2?
