Toluene: Toluene undergoes resonance due to the hyperconjugation effect.

Does toluene have resonance?

In Toluene, the methyl group releases electrons towards the benzene ring partly due to inductive effect and mainly due to hyperconjugation. ... The no bond resonance forms of toluene due to hyperconjugation are shown below.

Which does not show resonance?

Answer: (c) Ethylamine does not show resonance. Explanation: ... Resonance refers to the combination of two or more structures to describe the bonding pattern in different molecules or ions.

Does methyl benzene show resonance?

In order to explain this observation there are two effects to consider, inductive and resonance effects. Inductively the methyl group releases electron density into the benzene ring. This is because the methyl group, being sp3 hybridized, is less electronegative than the sp2 hybridized aromatic carbon.

How do you know if a structure has resonance?

1. The same molecular formulas.
2. The same total number of electrons (same overall charge).
3. The same atoms connected together. Although, they can differ in whether the connections are single, double or triple bonds.

What are three exceptions to the octet rule?

However, there are three general exceptions to the octet rule: Molecules, such as NO, with an odd number of electrons; Molecules in which one or more atoms possess more than eight electrons, such as SF₆; and. Molecules such as BCl₃, in which one or more atoms possess less than eight electrons.

How do you determine which resonance structure is most stable?

1. The resonance structures in which all atoms have complete valence shells is more stable. ...
2. The structures with the least number of formal charges is more stable. ...
3. The structures with a negative charge on the more electronegative atom will be more stable.

Which is the most stable carbocation?

Correct answer:

The carbocation bonded to three alkanes (tertiary carbocation) is the most stable, and thus the correct answer. Secondary carbocations will require more energy than tertiary, and primary carbocations will require the most energy.

Why is methyl an activator?

If electrophilic aromatic substitution of a monosubstituted benzene is faster than that of benzene under identical conditions, the substituent in the monosubstituted benzene is called an activating group. ... Thus, the methyl group is an activating group.

Why Toluene is ortho and para directing?

As an example let's look at toluene -- which is methyl benzene. ... For this reason the methyl group is called an "ortho-para directing group." It "directs" the incoming electrophile to attack at the ortho and para positions relative to itself.

Which can show resonance?

A molecule or ion with such delocalized electrons is represented by several contributing structures (also called resonance structures or canonical forms). Such is the case for ozone (O3), an allotrope of oxygen with a V-shaped structure and an O–O–O angle of 117.5°.

What is equivalent resonance?

equivalent resonance structures precisely are any 2 or more stages between the complete displacement of a charge over an unsaturated alkyl group or alkyl and non-alkyl group.

Does Hcoo show resonance?

Write resonance structures for the formate ion, HCOO⁻. ... The resonance structures are drawn using a double-headed arrow, which shows that the structure can exist in any form but the actual structure is a hybrid structure of all the resonance structures.

What does toluene dissolve?

Toluene is a very good solvent because, unlike water, it can dissolve many organic compounds. In many commercial products, toluene is used as a solvent that is present in paint thinners, nail polish remover, glues, and correction fluid.

Which is more acidic toluene or phenol?

Phenol is more acidic than toluene as there is an OH group present in phenol.

Why hyperconjugation is no bond resonance?

Hyperconjugation features the delocalisation of electrons from a single bond between hydrogen and some other atom in the molecule. The electrons that belong to the bond are delocalised. ... Since there is no bond between the hydrogen and the other atom, hyperconjugation is also known as no bond resonance.

Is ch3 an activator?

As we just saw, CH₃ is a perfect example of an activating group; when we substitute a hydrogen on benzene for CH₃, the rate of nitration is increased. A deactivating group, on the other hand, decreases the rate of an electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction, relative to hydrogen.

Which is the least stable carbocation?

Three main factors increase the stability of carbocations: Increasing the number of adjacent carbon atoms: methyl (least stable carbocation) < primary < secondary < tertiary (most stable carbocation)

Which is the most stable carbocation CH3 ch2+?

2° carbocation i.e., CH₃CH⁺CH₃ is more stable carbocation than 1° carbocation because 2° carbocation has more hyper conjunction effect i.e it has 6 alpha hydrogen which is more stable. More will be the hyper conjunction effect more will be the stable carbocation.

Which is the most stable alkene?

Tetra-substituted alkene is the most stable followed by tri-substituted and di-substituted and then mono-substituted. - Alkenes that have a higher number of alkylated carbon atoms are more stable due to +R (resonance of a positive charge) effect.

Does more resonance mean more stable?

Because resonance allows for delocalization, in which the overall energy of a molecule is lowered since its electrons occupy a greater volume, molecules that experience resonance are more stable than those that do not. These molecules are termed resonance stabilized.

Which is the most stable hydride?

Therefore, NH₃ is the most stable hydride.

Which is the most stable radical?

Quiz time: one of the most stable free radicals known is the triphenylmethyl radical, discovered by Moses Gomberg in 1900. In the absence of oxygen, this radical is indefinitely stable at room temperature.
