A: Often low clouds, like stratus and cumulus, appear to have flat bases. These clouds form as air near the ground is rising. As the air rises it expands and cools. This cooling causes the relative humidity to increase as the rising air temperature approaches the dew point temperature.

Why cumulus clouds have flat bases?

Cumulus clouds, those puffy clouds common in the sky during warm days, especially in the summer, are indeed flat-bottomed. It's because of the way they form. They exist at the top of columns of warm air rising into the sky from the ground. ... The air cools as it rises, though it's still warmer than the surrounding air.

What is it called when clouds are flat on the bottom?

As the air continues to rise, that first chunk of cloud gets pushed up as more cloud forms beneath, resulting in a cloud that's puffy on top but flat on the bottom. That level is called the lifting condensation level (LCL) or convective condensation level (CCL), depending on the lifting mechanism.

What is the rarest type of cloud?

Nacreous clouds are some of the rarest clouds on the planet. They are a form of polar stratospheric cloud, which is a main culprit in chemical destruction of the ozone layer.

Why do clouds turn GREY?

When clouds are thin, they let a large portion of the light through and appear white. But like any objects that transmit light, the thicker they are, the less light makes it through. As their thickness increases, the bottoms of clouds look darker but still scatter all colors. We perceive this as gray.

Ask Ellen: Why do some clouds have flat bottoms and puffy tops?

What is the minimum time for the lifespan of a cumulus cloud?

The average lifespan of a cumulus cloud is less than one hour, after which it either turns to a cumulonimbus cloud or tends to disintegrate.

When a cumulus cloud becomes a thunderstorm What is it called?

Cumulus clouds are puffy clouds that sometimes look like pieces of floating cotton. ... When the top of the cumulus resembles the head of a cauliflower, it is called cumulus congestus or towering cumulus. These clouds grow upward, and they can develop into a giant cumulonimbus, which is a thunderstorm cloud.

What do flat clouds mean?

Stratus clouds are dull grayish clouds that often stretch across and block the entire sky; stratus means "a layer" and these clouds form flat, unbroken sheets, like a fog that is not on the ground. Stratus clouds produce only mist, drizzle or very light snow.

What are the 8 types of precipitation?

• Rain. Most commonly observed, drops larger than drizzle (0.02 inch / 0.5 mm or more) are considered rain. ...
• Drizzle. Fairly uniform precipitation composed exclusively of fine drops very close together. ...
• Ice Pellets (Sleet) ...
• Hail. ...
• Small Hail (Snow Pellets) ...
• Snow. ...
• Snow Grains. ...
• Ice Crystals.

Why do clouds look fluffy?

When warm air rises from the ground, it carries water vapor with it. When the water vapor meets the cold air found high in the sky, the gas condenses to liquid and forms cumulus clouds. While these fluffy-white clouds look like soft pillows of cotton, they are actually composed of small water droplets.

What are the 4 major types of clouds?

• Cirro-form. The Latin word 'cirro' means curl of hair. ...
• Cumulo-form. Generally detached clouds, they look like white fluffy cotton balls. ...
• Strato-form. From the Latin word for 'layer' these clouds are usually broad and fairly wide spread appearing like a blanket. ...
• Nimbo-form.

What are the 3 stages of thunderstorms?

Thunderstorms have three stages in their life cycle: The developing stage, the mature stage, and the dissipating stage. The developing stage of a thunderstorm is marked by a cumulus cloud that is being pushed upward by a rising column of air (updraft).

What weather does a cumulus cloud bring?

What weather is associated with cumulus clouds? Mostly, cumulus indicates fair weather, often popping up on bright sunny days. Though if conditions allow, cumulus can grow into towering cumulus congestus or cumulonimbus clouds, which can produce showers.

How high can a cumulus cloud get?

Cumulonimbus clouds are the kings of all clouds, rising from low altitudes to more than 60,000 feet (20,000 meters) above ground level. They grow due to rising air currents called updrafts, with their tops flattening out into an anvil shape.

What stage of a thunderstorm is the most severe?

The Mature Cumulus Stage

The storm has considerable depth, often reaching 40,000 to 60,000 feet (12 to 18 km). Strong updrafts and downdrafts coexist. This is the most dangerous stage when tornadoes, large hail, damaging winds, and flash flooding may occur.

Are cumulus clouds stable or unstable?

Cumulus clouds developing into thunderstorms in a conditionally unstable atmosphere over the Great Plains.

Is a towering cumulus considered a thunderstorm?

All thunderstorms, whether or not they become severe, progress through a life cycle which may be divided into three main stages. The developing stage, called the cumulus or towering cumulus stage, is characterized by updraft. As the updraft develops, precipitation is produced in the upper portions of the storm.

Do cumulus clouds bring rain?

Cumulus clouds are created by strong updrafts of warm, moist air. Most forms of heavy precipitation fall from cumulus clouds. The weather they bring depends on their height and size. The higher the base of a cloud is, the drier the atmosphere and the fairer the weather will be.

How fast do cumulus clouds move?

Typically, clouds move at an average speed of 30-250mph. However, it can change according to the situation and wind conditions. There are different factors that influence the speed of cloud movement. For instance, at higher altitudes, the clouds tend to move faster than at lower levels.

Which type of clouds give rain?

Towering cumulus, or cumulus congestus, may generate rain; they may also develop into the even larger, more energetic cumulonimbus. Cumulonimbus clouds, sometimes called "thunderheads," are associated with thunderstorms, lightning and intense, heavy rains as well as hail.

Can you overfly a thunderstorm?

Jet aircraft can safely fly over thunderstorms only if their flight altitude is well above the turbulent cloud tops. ... If a busy jet route becomes blocked by intense thunderstorms, traffic will reroute into the neighboring airspace, which can become overcrowded if the flow is not managed (see animation).

How long do thunderstorms last for?

Single-cell thunderstorm

Such thunderstorms are most likely to occur in mid-summer and usually last no more than an hour. They rarely produce severe weather.

How long does it take for a thunderstorm to form?

The whole process takes about one hour for an ordinary thunderstorm. Severe thunderstorms like supercells and squall lines are much larger, more powerful, and last for several hours.

Is fog a cloud?

Fog is a cloud that touches the ground. ... Fog shows up when water vapor, or water in its gaseous form, condenses. During condensation, molecules of water vapor combine to make tiny liquid water droplets that hang in the air. You can see fog because of these tiny water droplets.

What is the biggest type of cloud?

Cirrus clouds are the highest of all clouds and are composed entirely of ice crystals. Cirrus clouds are precipitating clouds, although the ice crystals evaporate high above the earth's surface.
