Paralytic shellfish poisoning ( PSP ) is a serious illness caused by eating shellfish contaminated with algae that contains Paralytic Shellfish Toxin ( PST ), a toxin harmful to humans. This toxin is extremely poisonous; as little as one milligram (0.000035 ounce) is enough to kill an adult.

What happens when you get paralytic shellfish poisoning?

PSP affects those who come into contact with the affected shellfish by ingestion. Symptoms can appear ten to 30 minutes after ingestion, and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, tingling or burning lips, gums, tongue, face, neck, arms, legs, and toes.

How long does paralytic shellfish poisoning last?

In patients with mild to moderate poisoning, effects resolve over 2-3 days, but in severe cases, weakness may persist for up to a week. In most fatalities, death occurs rapidly, typically within 12 hours.

Is paralytic shellfish poisoning fatal?

People can become ill from eating shellfish contaminated with Paralytic Shellfish Poison. This biotoxin affects the nervous system and paralyzes muscles, thus the term "paralytic" shellfish poison. High levels of Paralytic Shellfish Poison can cause severe illness and death.

Which toxins is responsible for paralytic shellfish poisoning?

The two toxins associated with this poisoning, saxitoxin and gonyautoxin, are produced by marine microalgae dinoflagellates that are associated with harmful algal blooms, such as “red tides,” and are then accumulated in bivalve shellfish to give rise to “paralytic” shellfish poisoning.

Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP) Toxins

What are the possible causes of paralytic shellfish poisoning?

Causes. Paralytic shellfish poisoning is caused from the ingestion of toxin-contaminated bivalve shellfish and crustaceans. Algal blooms of dinoflagellates, usually during the warmer months of June to October, result in toxin accumulation in filter feeders such as bivalves.

How long does it take for shellfish poisoning?

Symptoms of shellfish poisoning begin 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating and include: Nausea. Vomiting. Diarrhea.

How is paralytic shellfish poisoning transmitted?

Paralytic shellfish poisoning is acquired by eating shellfish containing the toxin. Cooking or freezing does not inactivate the toxin. Symptoms occur minutes to hours after eating contaminated shellfish. Paralytic shellfish poisoning is not transmitted from person to person.

How is paralytic shellfish poisoning diagnosed?

Diagnosis of PSP is presumptive and based on recent ingestion of shellfish and presence of manifestations consistent with symptoms of PSP; diagnosis is confirmed by detection of paralytic shellfish toxins in a clinical specimen or food sample.

Do shellfish have toxins?

Shellfish toxins are often associated with the presence of harmful algal blooms, when toxins can accumulate in shellfish and cause disease in humans. Shellfish poisoning syndromes are classified as paralytic, amnesic, diarrhetic, and neurotoxic.

What can be done to reduce neurotoxic shellfish poisoning?

There is no specific treatment for shellfish poisoning. However, some health care professionals may induce vomiting or use a stomach pump to remove food if the patient is seen within three hours of ingesting the shellfish.

How long does it take to get sick from bad seafood?

What are the symptoms of ciguatera poisoning? Symptoms of ciguatera poisoning generally appear between a few minutes and 6 hours after the toxic fish has been eaten. These include a variety of gastrointestinal, neurological, and cardiovascular abnormalities.

How can shellfish poisoning be prevented?

1. Buy shellfish from reliable and licensed seafood shops;
2. Remove the viscera, gonads and roe before cooking;
3. Eat a smaller amount of shellfish in any one meal and avoid consuming the cooking liquid;

What algae causes paralytic shellfish poisoning?

Paralytic shellfish poisoning is a foodborne illness that typically develops after consumption of shellfish contaminated with saxitoxin. During blooms of toxic algae, especially dinoflagellates of the genera Alexandrium, feeding molluscan bivalves and other shellfish concentrate the toxin and are unsafe to consume.

What are the ecological impacts of paralytic shellfish poisoning?

With extensive exposure to PSTs, the toxin causes subsequent paralysis in the muscles. Therefore, PSTs prevent fish from effectively foraging or avoiding predators. Ultimately, the most common result of the toxicity is death. Fish mortality associated with PSTs have been reported worldwide.

Can diatoms make you sick?

Some diatoms and dinoflagellates can produce toxins (poisons). When people or animals are exposed to these toxins, they can become sick.

Can you get food poisoning from frozen prawns?

When you refreeze thawed prawns, the process breaks down cells, takes away the moisture, and changes the integrity of the protein. Another reason is that thawed food develops bacteria faster than fresh, which can lead to an increased incidence of food poisoning.

What does seafood poisoning feel like?

There are two types of food poisoning you can get from eating fish. They are ciguatera poisoning and scombroid poisoning. Ciguatera poisoning symptoms include abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Symptoms can progress to headache, muscle aches, and itchy, tingly, or numbness of the skin.

Can eating too much crab make you sick?

In people, consumption of domoic acid causes nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps shortly after eating tainted shellfish. Within 48 hours this can develop into headache, dizziness, confusion, motor weakness, and in severe cases, short-term memory loss, coma, and death.

Can shellfish make you sick?

Diarrhetic (or diarrheal) shellfish poisoning occurs from ingesting shellfish (such as mussels, cockles, scallops, oysters and whelks) that contain toxins. These toxins cause gastroenteritis symptoms, such as watery diarrhea.
