__________are excavates with double nuclei and multiple flagella. __________are euglenozoans with distinctly structured mitochondria. ___________are single-celled photosynthetic protists that live in the upper layers of Earth's lakes and oceans.

Which of the following are characteristics of foraminifera?

Foraminifera are enormously successful organisms and a dominant deep-sea life form. These amoeboid protists are characterized by a netlike (granuloreticulate) system of pseudopodia and a life cycle that is often complex but typically involves an alternation of sexual and asexual generations.

Are Excavata unicellular or multicellular?

Excavata is a major supergroup of unicellular organisms belonging to the domain Eukaryota.

Which is grouped with the algae?

algae, singular alga, members of a group of predominantly aquatic photosynthetic organisms of the kingdom Protista.

Is euglena a plant or animal?

Euglena, genus of more than 1,000 species of single-celled flagellated (i.e., having a whiplike appendage) microorganisms that feature both plant and animal characteristics. Found worldwide, Euglena live in fresh and brackish water rich in organic matter and can also be found in moist soils.

bacterial flagellum

How are excavates classified?

Many of the protist species classified into the supergroup Excavata are asymmetrical, single-celled organisms with a feeding groove “excavated” from one side. This supergroup includes heterotrophic predators, photosynthetic species, and parasites. Its subgroups are the diplomonads, parabasalids, and euglenozoans.

What is the most common type of algae?

Golden-brown algae and diatoms are the most abundant types of unicellular algae, accounting for around 100,000 different species. Both are found in fresh and salt water environments. Diatoms are much more common than golden-brown algae and consist of many types of plankton found in the ocean.

What are the three major categories of algae?

Macroalgae are classified into three major groups: brown algae (Phaeophyceae), green algae (Chlorophyta), and red algae (Rhodophyta). As all of the groups contain chlorophyll granules, their characteristic colors are derived from other pigments.

What are the 3 main types of algae?

• Brown Algae (Phaeophyta)
• Green Algae (Chlorophyta)
• Red Algae (Rhodophyta)

Are chromalveolata unicellular?

Members of this subgroup range in size from single-celled diatoms to the massive and multicellular kelp. The diatoms are unicellular photosynthetic protists that encase themselves in intricately patterned, glassy cell walls composed of silicon dioxide in a matrix of organic particles (Figure 7).

Is Trypanosoma a Excavata?

4.3 Excavata

The Euglenozoa, include the Trypanosomatids, that are responsible for three major human diseases, sleeping sickness (African trypanosomiasis), Chagas disease (South American trypanosomiasis) and leishmaniasis. Although all trypanosomatids are exclusively parasitic, and the Trypanosoma brucei, T.

Which protist groups are most closely related to plants?

Both groups contain both single-celled and multicellular algae. Charophytes are the most closely related organisms to land plants and are found in freshwater environments.

Are foraminifera harmful?

Reticulopods of benthic and planktic foraminifera have been periodically reported to possess the ability to narcotize, paralyze or even kill larger prey organisms by means of toxins.

Is a foraminifera a phytoplankton?

Forams represent an ancient and speciose group of zooplankton which live mostly in sediment (as is the case here), but also in the water column. ... Within the red squares you will see a second, smaller phytoplankton species known as a Coccolithophore.

Are foraminifera prokaryotic?

Summary. Benthic foraminifera are unicellular eukaryotes inhabiting sediments of aquatic environments.

What are the 2 main types of algae?

• Green algae (Chlorophyta) Green algae are mainly found in aquatic habitats especially freshwater environments. ...
• Euglenophyta (Euglenoids) ...
• Golden-brown algae and Diatoms (Chrysophyta) ...
• Fire algae (Pyrrophyta) ...
• Red algae (Rhodophyta) ...
• Yellow-green algae (Xanthophyta) ...
• Brown algae (Paeophyta)

What is the largest group of algae?

Dinoflagellates make up the largest group of algae aside from the diatoms. Most dinoflagellates are unicellular and have two flagella of different lengths.

What are the two types of algae?

• Green algae (Chlorophyta)
• Euglenophyta (Euglenoids)
• Golden-brown algae and Diatoms (Chrysophyta)
• Fire algae (Pyrrophyta)
• Red algae (Rhodophyta)
• Yellow-green algae (Xanthophyta)
• Brown algae (Paeophyta)

Is algae bad for ponds?

Algae does play a critical role in your pond health, but an imbalance can be catastrophic to your fish population and overall pond health. Algae species, in general, serve a purpose and are essential for a healthy pond.

Is red algae bad in a pond?

On occasion a pond may develop "red algae," which also may be harmful to aquatic animals. "Red algae" are not actually algae, but their growth and control are similar to that of other planktonic algae.

What are 3 benefits of using algae as a biofuel?

• A Renewable Resource. Unlike fossil fuels, algae are completely renewable. ...
• Carbon Dioxide Neutral. ...
• Extremely Productive. ...
• Environmentally-Friendly. ...
• Produces Numerous Byproducts. ...
• Versatile Fuel Source. ...
• Not Enough Information. ...
• Large Water Demand.

Which excavates lack fully functional mitochondria?

Among the Excavata are the diplomonads, which include the intestinal parasite, Giardia lamblia. Until recently, these protists were believed to lack mitochondria. Mitochondrial remnant organelles, called mitosomes, have since been identified in diplomonads, but these mitosomes are essentially nonfunctional.

What are the three monophyletic groups of excavates?

Although previous molecular analyses have not recovered an excavate clade, 3 higher-order groupings among excavates have been established: Metamonada, Discicristata + Jakobida, and Malawimonas.

Is Excavata parasitic?

Excavata are a supergroup of protists that are defined by an asymmetrical appearance with a feeding groove that is “excavated” from one side; it includes various types of organisms which are parasitic, photosynthetic and heterotrophic predators.
