The hypsometric curve is the graph on the right hand side of this page. This curve is typically used to demonstrate that the Earth has two types of crust, continental and oceanic. The curve shows the percentage of the Earth's surface above any elevation.

What is the use of hypsometric curve?

Introduction: A hypsometric curve is essentially a graph that shows the proportion of land area that exists at various elevations by plotting relative area against relative height. “Hypsometric curve,' also called 'Hypsographic Curve', Cumulative Height Frequency Curve for the Earth's surface or some part thereof.

What does the hypsographic curve show us about the sizes of our mountains to the depths of our oceans?

The hypsographic curve shows the amount of Earth's surface at various elevations and depths. Horizontal dashed lines indicate average height of the continents at 840 meters (2,750 feet) above sea level, and average depth of the oceans at 3,800 meters (12,460 feet) below sea level.

What is hypsometric distribution?

Definition. Hypsometry describes the distribution of elevation of land with respect to sea level within an area of interest, with positive values being above sea level and negative values below sea level.

What is hypsometric analysis?

Hypsometric analysis describes the elevation distribution across an area of land surface. It is an important tool to assess and compare the geomorphic evolution of various landforms irrespective of the factor that may be responsible for it.

Why Earth Has Two Levels | Hypsometric Curve

How do you calculate Hypsometric curve?

1. Find 10% on the horizontal axis.
2. Draw a line up from 10% until it reaches the hypsometric curve (the dark red curve).
3. Now, draw a line across to the vertical axis (at approximately 0.5 km).
4. So, you find that 10% of the Earth's surface has an elevation of 0.5 km or higher.

What is Clinographic curve?

clinographic curve is drawn by plotting the ground slope against the contour height starting at the top of any area. ... Generally, the shape of the clinographic curve is similar to the hypsographic curve (Figure 8). ...

Why is the Earth's Hypsometry bimodal?

The distribution is theorised to be bimodal due to the difference in density between the lighter continental crust and denser oceanic crust. On other planets within this solar system, elevations are typically unimodal, owing to the lack of oceans on those bodies.

What is Hypsometry Levelling?

Hypsometry, the science of measuring the elevation and depth of features on Earth's surface with respect to sea level. ... Scientists can show how the areas of oceans, marginal seas, and terrestrial basins change with elevation and depth using a special curve known as a hypsometric, or hypsographic, curve.

How do you find a hypsometric integral?

A hypsometric integral is usually calculated by plotting the cumulative height and the cumulative area under that height for individual watersheds and then taking the area under that curve to get the hypsometric integral.

What is bathymetric curve?

A bathymetric chart is a type of isarithmic map that depicts the submerged topography and physiographic features of ocean and sea bottoms. Their primary purpose is to provide detailed depth contours of ocean topography as well as provide the size, shape and distribution of underwater features.

How much of Earth's land is below sea level?

Strictly speaking, most of the surface of the Earth is below sea level because oceans cover 71% of the planet. But sea level varies and during the Great Ice Age 18,000 years ago, sea level was 130 meters lower.

Where are seamounts located?

Seamounts are commonly found near the boundaries of Earth's tectonic plates and mid-plate near hotspots. At mid-ocean ridges, plates are spreading apart and magma rises to fill the gaps.

Which is a hypsographic curve?

Hypsometric curve, also called Hypsographic Curve, cumulative height frequency curve for the Earth's surface or some part thereof. A hypsometric curve is essentially a graph that shows the proportion of land area that exists at various elevations by plotting relative area against relative height.

What is a hypsometric map?

Any map showing relief by means of contours, hachures, shading, tinting, or any other convention.

How does the hypsographic curve support plate tectonics?

The shape of Earth's hypsographic curve can be used to support the existence of plate tectonics on Earth. Slope areas of the curve show that there is a very uneven distribution of area at different depths and elevations. ... Convergent active margins are associated with oceanic-continental convergent plate boundaries.

What is trigonometric Levelling in surveying?

Trigonometric Leveling is the branch of Surveying in which we find out the vertical distance between two points with the help of some measurements of the vertical angles and the known distances. ... The distances are measured directly(as in the plane surveying) or they are computed as in the geodetic surveying.

What are the differences between barometric Levelling and trigonometric Levelling?

Trigonometric leveling involves measuring a vertical angle from a known distance with a theodolite and computing the elevation of the point. ... In barometric leveling, differences in height are determined by measuring the differences in atmospheric pressure at various elevations.

What is tinting in topography?

h) Layer colouring or tinting :Layer colouring or tinting uses different colours or shades to represent different heights. It is a mapping convention for darker colours to signify greater heights .

What is the result of Isostasy?

Isostasy is the rising or settling of a portion of the Earth's lithosphere that occurs when weight is removed or added in order to maintain equilibrium between buoyancy forces that push the lithosphere upward and gravity forces that pull the lithosphere downward.

What is a bimodal global topography?

Bimodal topography means having two types of topography, high and low in earth's case. This has to do with the relative densities of the oceanic and continental plates. Isostasy is the concept of using buoyancy to explain topography variation.

What are the topographic properties of the earth?

These features typically include natural formations such as mountains, rivers, lakes, and valleys. Manmade features such as roads, dams, and cities may also be included. Topography often records the various elevations of an area using a topographical map.

What is altimetric frequency curve?

Introduction: Altimetric Frequency Garph or Curve involves the computation of the frequency of occurrence of heights above sea level and plotting it on the graph paper. ... Either spot height all over the map of an area may be counted, 2.

What is a Clinograph?

1 : an instrument for ascertaining the deviation from the vertical of a borehole, well, or shaft. 2 : a drawing instrument having two straight edges united by a hinge and capable of being set at any desired angle.

What is a Clinographic projection?

An oblique projection used for representing crystals in such a manner that no crystal face will be projected as a line.
