The waves produced in a sonometer can be defined as a standing wave.

Which waves are produced in Sonometer experiment?

Waves produced in sonometer are stationary transverse waves , i e the waves on a string forming rests and troughs.

How are stationary waves produced in the Sonometer wire?

When a string under tension is set into vibration, a transverse progressive wave moves towards the end of the wire and gets reflected. Thus stationary waves are formed. The sonometer consists of a hollow sounding box about a metre long. ... A transverse stationary wave is set up in the wire.

Which type of waves are produced when stretched wire is plucked at some point in Sonometer?

On plucking the wire of a sonometer, which type of waves are produced in a string and in the air ? Solution : Transverse waves in a string and longitudinal waves in air.

What are transverse waves?

Transverse wave, motion in which all points on a wave oscillate along paths at right angles to the direction of the wave's advance. Surface ripples on water, seismic S (secondary) waves, and electromagnetic (e.g., radio and light) waves are examples of transverse waves.

What are 2 examples of transverse waves?

• ripples on the surface of water.
• vibrations in a guitar string.
• a Mexican wave in a sports stadium.
• electromagnetic waves – eg light waves, microwaves, radio waves.
• seismic S-waves.

What are the 2 types of waves?

Types and features of waves

Waves come in two kinds, longitudinal and transverse. Transverse waves are like those on water, with the surface going up and down, and longitudinal waves are like of those of sound, consisting of alternating compressions and rarefactions in a medium.

What is the principle of Sonometer experiment?

A Sonometer is a device based on the principle of Resonance. It is used to verify the laws of vibration of stretched string and also to determine the frequency of a tuning fork.

What types of waves are produced in a Sonometer wire in tuned condition?

The waves produced in a sonometer can be defined as a standing wave.

Which material is used for a Sonometer wire?

Sonometer wire is made of soft iron for better results.

What is the beat frequency?

The beat frequency is the difference in frequency of two waves. It is because of constructive and destructive interference. In sound, we hear said beat frequency as the rate at which the loudness of the sound varies whereas we hear the ordinary frequency of the waves as the pitch of the sound.

What type of waves are sound waves?

These particle-to-particle, mechanical vibrations of sound conductance qualify sound waves as mechanical waves. Sound energy, or energy associated with the vibrations created by a vibrating source, requires a medium to travel, which makes sound energy a mechanical wave.

What is the frequency of a string?

We also know that once the speed is fixed, frequency (in Hertz) and wavelength (in meters) are inversely proportional; v=fλ. So the three parameters that determine the frequencies of a string are tension, density (mass per length) and length.

What kind of wave is resonance?

There are two types of stationary waves i.e. transverse and longitudinal. These waves are stationary. But the waves produced in a resonance tube are not stationary. Resonance tubes produce sound waves and sound waves are just longitudinal waves.

What are the applications of Sonometer?

A sonometer is a diagnostic instrument used to measure the tension, frequency or density of vibrations. They are used in medical settings to test both hearing and bone density.

Who invented Sonometer?

In fact, the monochord was invented in the 7th century B.C. by Pythagoras. The monochord was modified by the French instrument maker, Albert Marloye, in the mid 1800's and became known as a differential sonometer.

What happens the wavelength of a wave increases?

As a wavelength increases in size, its frequency and energy (E) decrease. From these equations you may realize that as the frequency increases, the wavelength gets shorter. As the frequency decreases, the wavelength gets longer. There are two basic types of waves: mechanical and electromagnetic.

Which type of transformer is used in Sonometer experiment?

A sonometer is used to determine the frequency of alternating current. A step down transformer is used for the determination of frequency of A.C. because the voltage of the A.C. mains is 220V, which is dangerous.

What is the aim of Sonometer experiment in physics lab?

it is possible to calculate the frequencies of the fundamental mode (n=1) and harmonics (n>1) for a given combination of T, μ and L. The sonometer allows accurate variation of the tension in the wire, by hanging a series of masses from the end arm, and the length of the wire by moving the bridges.

Why is it called Sonometer?

Answer: Sonometre is made from two words Sono + metre. Sono means sound. Thus sonometre is an device used to measure frequency of sound wave.

What is the function of Sonometer board?

Sonometer is basically used to study the relationship between frequency, tension, linear mass density and length of a stretched string.

Why do Sonometers have two holes?

The holes in the sonometer box provides a way so that vibrations from the tuning fork (which is excited near the sonometer) is transferred to the inside of the sonometer box. Hence holes are provided to the sonometer box to communicate the frequency of vibration of the string to the inside hollow portion of the box.

What are the 7 types of waves?

What are the 5 properties of waves?

There are many properties that scientists use to describe waves. They include amplitude, frequency, period, wavelength, speed, and phase.

What are 4 types of waves?

• Microwaves.
• X-ray.
• Radio waves.
• Ultraviolet waves.
