Which of the following molars usually have 5 cusps?
There are usually five well-developed cusps on mandibular first molars: two on the buccal (side nearest the cheek), two lingual (side nearest the tongue), and one distal. The shape of the developmental and supplementary grooves, on the occlusal surface, are describes as being 'M' shaped.
Do molars have five cusps?
Molars normally possess either four or five cusps. In certain populations the maxillary molars, especially first molars, will possess a fifth cusp situated on the mesiolingual cusp known as the Cusp of Carabelli.
Can molars have 5 points?
While maxillary (upper) molars typically have four cusps on the top to help with chewing, some people have a fifth cusp on the side of the first one. This additional cusp is known as the cusp of Carabelli.
How many cusps does a molar have?
Molars are the flat teeth at the rear of the mouth. Each molar typically has four or five cusps. They are used exclusively for crushing and grinding.

The cusp of Carabelli is most common among Europeans (75-85% of individuals) and rarest in Pacific Islands (35-45%), although no study is referenced here to back up that claim.
Which molar is the largest?
The maxillary first molar is the largest tooth in the maxillary arch, and in fact, has the largest crown in the mouth. Of all the maxillary molars, the first molar is the least variable in anatomic form, and is thus the standard to which the other maxillary molars are compared.
What premolar often has 3 cusps?
Anatomy: The mandibular second premolar most commonly has three cusps but can have two as well. The three cusp variety has one large cusp on the buccal with two smaller lingual cusps.
What is the longest root in maxillary molars?
- The lingual root of the maxillary first molar has an average length of 13–13.7 mm, depending on the authors [2, 3] (Figure 8(a)). ...
- The lingual root is the longest, largest, and strongest of the three first molar roots [4].
- The lingual root is conical and has a bluntly rounded apex [2].
Do primary molars have cusp of Carabelli?
Prominent cusp of Carabelli in maxillary primary second molar bilaterally. All the three case reports showed the presence of prominent cusp of Carabelli in maxillary primary second molar as well as on maxillary permanent first molars. Presence of Carabelli trait in primary molars is rare.
Do all teeth have cusps?
As with all incisors, their function is for shearing or cutting food during mastication (chewing). There are no cusps on the teeth. Instead, the surface area of the tooth used in eating is called an incisal ridge or incisal edge.
What tooth has cusp of Carabelli?
The Cusp of Carabelli is a characteristic morphological trait often seen on the palatal surface of the mesiopalatal cusp of maxillary permanent molars and maxillary second deciduous molars [2].
Which is the smallest cusp in mandibular first molar?
The mesiolingual cusp is the largest cusp and the distal cusp or the hypoconulus is the smallest (Fig. 1). Several variations have been reported in the number and location of cusps in the mandibular first permanent molar.
How do you tell the difference between premolar and molar?
The main distinctions between premolar and molar teeth are in their size and shape. While a molar has four cusps or points, a premolar has two to three. While premolars are larger and wider than your more narrow canine teeth and have a flat surface area, molars are significantly larger than their bicuspid neighbors.
How many cusps are in the lower first molar?
Lower first molar (M 1) crowns have five well-developed cusps usually arranged in the classic Y-5 pattern.
Which primary mandibular molar is the largest?
1. The largest primary tooth is the mandibular second molar. 2. The mandibular lateral incisor is the smallest primary tooth.
Do all maxillary molars have 3 roots?
Maxillary first molars are generally three-rooted with four root canals (Fig. 4.13). The additional canal is located in the mesiobuccal root.
What are the roots of maxillary molars?
The maxillary first molar is the earliest permanent tooth that appears in the oral cavity and that makes it vulnerable to caries and furthers to the need of endodontic treatment. It has three roots [mesiobuccal (MB), distobuccal (DB), and palatal (P)] with four canals.
How many cusps are on a premolar?
The premolars, also called premolar teeth, or bicuspids, are transitional teeth located between the canine and molar teeth. In humans, there are two premolars per quadrant in the permanent set of teeth, making eight premolars total in the mouth. They have at least two cusps.
Which tooth has the longest root?
Canine teeth often have the longest root of all teeth in the human mouth and the last to fully erupt and fall into place; often around age 13. An impacted tooth essentially means that it is blocked, stuck, or unable to fully erupt and function properly.
Which premolar has a non functioning cusp?
Mandibular first premolars have two cusps. The one large and sharp is located on the buccal side (closest to the cheek) of the tooth. Since the lingual cusp (located nearer the tongue) is small and nonfunctional (which refers to a cusp not active in chewing), the mandibular first premolar resembles a small canine.
Which tooth is the longest?
The mandibular and maxillary canines are the longest teeth in the mouth.
Does molar teeth regrow?
Wisdom teeth do not grow back after they are removed. However, it is possible for a person to have more than four wisdom teeth. These extra teeth are called “supernumerary” teeth and can occur anywhere in the mouth.
