The most common form of crystalline silica is quartz, which is found in sand, gravel, clay, granite, diatomaceous earth, and many other forms of rock. Non-crystalline silica is found in glass, silicon carbide, and silicone. These materials are much less hazardous to the lungs.

What is the main source of silica?

Also called silica sand or quartz sand, silica is made of silicon dioxide (SiO2). Silicon compounds are the most significant component of the Earth's crust. Since sand is plentiful, easy to mine and relatively easy to process, it is the primary ore source of silicon. The metamorphic rock, quartzite, is another source.

How is silica formed naturally?

It is formed when silicon is exposed to oxygen. It has a covalent bond and is a superior electric insulator, posessing high chemical stability. Quartz is the second most common mineral in the Earth's continental crust.

Where is silica found?

An abundant natural material, crystalline silica is found in stone, soil, and sand. It is also found in concrete, brick, mortar, and other construction materials. Crystalline silica comes in several forms, with quartz being the most common.

Is silica harmful to humans?

Breathing in very small ("respirable") crystalline silica particles, causes multiple diseases, including silicosis, an incurable lung disease that leads to disability and death. Respirable crystalline silica also causes lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease.

Where did the iron and silica come from

Can silica damage your kidneys?

Silica dust particles are tiny, over 100 times smaller than the sand you see on the beaches. If you are exposed to silica dust in the workplace, this can cause many chronic health problems including kidney damage and kidney failure. The more you are exposed, the greater the risk.

What does silica do to your body?

Silica is an important trace mineral that provides strength and flexibility to the connective tissues of your body — cartilage, tendons, skin, bone, teeth, hair, and blood vessels. Silica is essential in the formation of collagen, the most abundant protein found in your body.

Is silica safe to eat?

According to the United States Department of Labor, about 2.3 million people in the U.S. are exposed to silica at work. As long as you aren't inhaling silica in its crystalline form, it appears to be safe to consume at the levels set out by the FDA.

What products contain silica?

Materials like sand, stone, concrete, and mortar contain crystalline silica. It is also used to make products such as glass, pottery, ceramics, bricks, and artificial stone.

What are the side effects of taking silica?

• silicosis, a progressive, irreversible lung disease.
• lung cancer.
• chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD.
• increased risk of tuberculosis.

What is the lowest amount of silica?

In a widely accepted silica-content classification scheme, rocks with more than 65 percent silica are called felsic; those with between 55 and 65 percent silica are intermediate; those with between 45 and 55 percent silica are mafic; and those with less than 45 percent are ultramafic.

What is a natural source of silica?

Good food sources of silica include whole grain bread and pasta, oatmeal, brown rice, oat and wheat bran cereals, bananas, mangos, green beans, spinach, and believe it or not, beer.

Are there two types of silica?

The overwhelming majority of natural crystalline silica exists as α-quartz. The other forms exist in a metastable state. The nomenclature used is that of α for a lower-temperature phase, and β for a higher-temperature phase.

What is the best form of silica to take?

Does silica help hair growth?

Silica doesn't promote hair growth, but it does strengthen hair and prevent thinning. It does this by delivering essential nutrients to your hair follicles. As a bonus, it can also benefit your skin and nails. Be sure to speak with your doctor before trying silica for hair loss.

Is silica safe in vitamins?

In supplements, it's used to prevent the various powdered ingredients from sticking together. As with many food additives, consumers often have concerns about silicon dioxide as an additive. However, numerous studies suggest there's no cause for these concerns.

Can the lungs remove silica dust?

Crystalline silica is hazardous to health

Repeated exposure to high levels of these fine crystalline silica particles can cause a variety of diseases that mostly affect the respiratory system. Our lungs have ways to remove some of the dust we breathe in, such as coughing or bringing up phlegm.

What are the symptoms of silica deficiency?

• The hair becomes brittle, it loses its shine and falls out;
• The nails are brittle;
• The skin becomes thinner;
• The wrinkles occur;
• The person experiences from slower wound healing;

How long do people live with silicosis?

The survival times of silicosis stage I , II and III, from the year of diagnosis to death, were 21.5, 15.8 and 6.8 years, respectively. There was 25 % of the silicosis patients whose survival time was beyond 33 y. The mean death age of all silicosis cases was 56.0 y.

Why you should never throw away silica packets?

Don't throw these away: Silica gel bags. ... Silicon dioxide dries out anything around them. Non-toxic, not poisonous, they do pose a choking hazard. Keep them away from children.

What is the most absorbable form of silica?

Orthosilicic acid is the major silica species present in drinking water and other fluids/beverages, including beer, so these provide the most available source of silicon to man. It is readily absorbed and excreted; at least 50% of intake (30, 33, 42, 47, 62, 67).

Is silica in water bad for you?

Silica ( quartz/ amourphus) is insoluble in water. However , it may have very very low solubility in hot water. If it is present in domestic / drinking water, indicated contamination of water ( anthropogenic/natural ) and if consume ,may cause forserious serious health hazards.

Does silica tighten skin?

When collagen is damaged, silica helps rebuild it and keep tissues connected. This provides a lifting and tightening effect on the skin all over your body. Silica may also be able to help the skin retain water, which helps it stay hydrated and healthy, and give it more “bounce” or elasticity.

Does silica remove aluminum from the body?

Conclusions: The oligomeric, high-aluminum-affinity form of soluble silica reduces aluminum availability from the human gastrointestinal tract. Its potential role in the amelioration of aluminum toxicity in other biological systems requires attention.

Can you recover from silicosis?

There's no cure for silicosis because the lung damage can't be reversed. Treatment aims to relieve symptoms and improve quality of life. The condition may continue to get worse, leading to further lung damage and serious disability, although this may happen very slowly over many years.
