What is wcc in blood test?
Robert Clark
The white cell count (WCC or WBC) gives the total number of white blood cells. This number is a combination of the 5 main white blood cell types - neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, basophils and eosinophils.
What is the normal range for WCC?
White cell (leucocyte) count
A number of viral infections can cause a temporary reduction in the white cell count. Abnormally high levels of white blood cells may indicate infection, tissue damage, leukaemia, or inflammatory diseases. The normal white cell count for adults is 4.0-11.0 x 109/L.
What does it mean if WCC is low?
A low white blood cell count usually is caused by: Viral infections that temporarily disrupt the work of bone marrow. Certain disorders present at birth (congenital) that involve diminished bone marrow function. Cancer or other diseases that damage bone marrow.
What does high WCC mean in a blood test?
When the WCC is high, the particular proportions of white-cell subtypes may be suggestive of: Infection – raised neutrophils. Specific infections – raised lymphocytes may be found in Infectious Mononucleosis, other viral infections, tuberculosis, some fungal infections, or longstanding bacterial infections.
What causes elevated WCC?
The following conditions can cause white blood cell counts to be high: Viral or bacterial infection. Inflammation. Excessive physical or emotional stress (such as fever, injury, or surgery)
