Medical Definition of atmometer : an instrument for measuring the evaporating capacity of the air.

Who invented Atmometer?

The atmometer or evaporimeter is a scientific instrument used for measuring the rate of evaporation from a wet surface to the atmosphere. It was invented by either the Dutch scientist Pieter van Musschenbroek or the Scottish mathematician and engineer Sir John Leslie.

What does a Drosometer measure RN?

an instrument for measuring the amount of dew formed on a given surface.

How do you use an evaporimeter?

The Piché evaporimeter uses an inverted graduated cylinder of water with a filter-paper seal at the mouth. Evaporation takes place from the wet filter paper and thus depletes the water in the cylinder, so that the rate of evaporation can be read directly from the graduations marking the water level.

Who invented evaporimeter?

Albert Piche, in Paris, described this simple instrument in 1872, and the Signal Service was soon using evaporimeters to determine the rate of evaporation in different parts of the United States.

What is ATMOMETER? What does ATMOMETER mean? ATMOMETER meaning, definition & explanation

What is Pan evaporimeter?

(1) The standard USWB Class-A pan evaporimeter is the most widely used evaporimeter in the world for finding evaporation from the free water surface. (2) It consists of a 121.5 cm diameter and 25.4 cm deep pan made of 20 gauge galvanized iron sheet with a stilling well.

Is Pan a standard?

In the United States, the National Weather Service has standardized its measurements on the Class A evaporation pan, a cylinder with a diameter of 47.5 in (120.7 cm) that has a depth of 10 in (25 cm). ... At the end of 24 hours, the amount of water to refill the pan to exactly two inches from its top is measured.

What is evaporimeter used for?

An atmometer or evaporimeter is a scientific instrument used for measuring the rate of water evaporation from a wet surface to the atmosphere. Atmometers are mainly used by farmers and growers to measure evapotranspiration (ET) rates of crops at any field location.

What is a lysimeter and how does it work?

The sampling lysimeter (Figure 1), also known as a pore water sampler, is an apparatus for the sampling of moisture from the soil. Moisture moves from the soil through a porous ceramic cup into some container for later collection. The movement of water occurs due to a vacuum being pulled on the ceramic cup.

Is Class A pan?

The Class A Evaporation Pan is a standard device for manual measurement of evaporation (Australian Bureau of Meteorology Class A type). The pan represents an open body of water: It is filled with water and exposed on a flat plateau. The evaporation rate is…

What does Drosometer measure?

: an instrument for measuring the weight of dew deposited on a body.

How was the kilogram defined?

Share. Facebook. For more than a century, the kilogram (kg) — the fundamental unit of mass in the International System of Units (SI) — was defined as exactly equal to the mass of a small polished cylinder, cast in 1879 of platinum and iridium.

Why is evapotranspiration higher in summer?

Evapotranspiration generally exceeds precipitation on middle and high latitude landmass areas during the summer season. Once again, the greater availability of solar radiation during this time enhances the evapotranspiration process.

Why is Potometer not accurate?

The potometer does not measure the rate of transpiration accurately because not all of the water that is taken by the plant is used for transpiration (water taken might be used for photosynthesis or by the cells to maintain turgidity). ... The water retained by the plant is so minute that it can be neglected.

What are different types of Evaporimeters?

• Floating Pans: These pans are made to float over the water surface. ...
• Pans Placed above the Surface: These are also known as open pan evaporimeter. ...
• Sunken Pans: In these pans, water surface is kept close to the soil surface. ...
• Lysimeters: These are embedded in the ground.

What is lysimeter method?

A lysimeter is a measuring device which can be used to measure the actual evapotranspiration which is released by plants. By recording the amount of precipitation that an area receives and the amount lost through the soil, the amount of water lost to evapotranspiration can be calculated.

What is lysimeter explain with diagram?

A lysimeter (from Greek λύσις (loosening) and the suffix -meter) is a measuring device which can be used to measure the amount of actual evapotranspiration which is released by plants (usually crops or trees). ... Lysimeters are of two types: weighing and non-weighing.

How does a Piezometer work?

Piezometer (Fig. 1.24) is used to measure underground water pressure. It converts water pressure to a frequency signal via a diaphragm and a tensioned steel wire. A change in pressure on the diaphragm causes a change in tension of the wire.

What is the use of current meter?

The instrument is used for the accurate determination of the current velocity in water ways, channels, rivers and the sea. The meter can also be applied in polluted water currents. The measurements are executed with the propeller mounted on the rod(s) or connected to a cable.

How do we measure rainfall?

The standard instrument for the measurement of rainfall is the 203mm (8 inch) rain gauge. This is essentially a circular funnel with a diameter of 203mm which collects the rain into a graduated and calibrated cylinder. The measuring cylinder can record up to 25mm of precipitation.

What is the instrument used to measure evaporation?

(USWB) Class-A open pan evaporimeter is most commonly used to measure evaporation from free water surface. deep pan made of 20 gauge galvanized iron sheet with a stilling well of size 10 cm diameter and 30 cm height placed within the tank.

What is a pan coefficient?

The ratio of the amount of evaporation from a large body of water to that measured in an evaporation pan.

What is a pan factor?

The factor (the ratio E_p / E_o, usually called the 'pan coefficient') is often taken as about 1.3. That implies that there is 30% more evaporation from the small area of a pan than from a lake because of the extra heat taken in through the pan's sides.

How does a Pan Evaporimeter work?

The principle of the evaporation pan is the following: ❒ the pan is installed in the field ❒ the pan is filled with a known quantity of water (the surface area of the pan is known and the water depth is measured) ❒ the water is allowed to evaporate during a certain period of time (usually 24 hours).

Why the pan is painted with white Colour?

The pan is painted white and is placed on a wooden frame so that air may circulate beneath the pan. Daily evaporation rate is given by the fall of water level in the stilling well during 24-hour period. ... Adjustments are made to the evaporation values if rain occurs during a period of measurement.
