Dielectric grease will not hurt anything. Ford even used it from the factory on the older electronic ignition systems to reduce RFI and improve cap and rotor life. The ozone created inside the cap can seriously erode the terminals. I use the grease on my cap and wire terminals inside and out.

Where should you not use dielectric grease?

Dielectric grease also protects the terminals from moisture and dirt. You should not apply grease between the terminals since it will prevent a good connection and shorten the battery's useful life.

Where do you put dielectric grease?

Squirt the dielectric grease onto a piece of cardboard. Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of dielectric grease around the inner wall of the spark plug boot. Put the plug boot back in place, and you're good to go.

How do I keep moisture out of my distributor cap?

Step 3 - Keeping Moisture Out

Replace the distributor cap. For extra protection run a bead of silicon caulk around the base of the cap. Replace all the wires, taking care to have all the wires in the right places. Try to start the car; it should turn over with no problem.

When should you use dielectric grease?

Dielectric grease is often used for battery terminals to prevent fusing and corrosion as well as high-energy ignition systems to prevent voltage leakage; however, it can also be used in combination with other various terminals and connectors, such as butt connectors, ring, spade, and heat shrink terminals.

How To Properly Use Dielectric Grease On Spark Plug Wires

Can you use too much dielectric grease?

Dielectric grease is an insulator. It should be used sparingly for corrosion resistance. Yes, if gooped on too heavily, it will cause issues.

Can you use Vaseline instead of dielectric grease?

Dielectric grease is not an electric conductor while anything soaked in petroleum jelly will burn if exposed to heat or an electric current. Also, Vaseline has a very low melting point compared to the dielectric grease which can withstand extreme temperatures.

Can I spray wd40 in my distributor?

Using WD-40 to repel water from spark plugs, distributors, alternators, and batteries is a good way to prevent corrosion and keep moisture away. You can also use it to ease the removal of spark plugs, especially if there is any rust or corrosion.

What causes moisture in distributor cap?

Most likely, when you forded the Nile that night, you got water inside the distributor cap, and it's causing the misfire by creating a short circuit. ... Eventually, as the engine heats up, the moisture in the distributor evaporates, the plug wires warm up and dry out a bit, and the cylinders all fire.

How do I know if my distributor cap is bad?

1. Engine misfires. Engine misfires can occur for a number of reasons. ...
2. Car doesn't start. ...
3. Check Engine Light comes on. ...
4. Excessive or unusual engine noises.

Is it OK to put dielectric grease on battery terminals?

Dielectric grease does not conduct electricity. Proper application is important! Do NOT get grease between the terminals! This will inhibit good connection and shorten battery life.

What can I use instead of dielectric grease?

Silicone-based Grease Silicone grease or silicone based grease has been considered to be one of the excellent options for the best dielectric grease alternatives. The best possible electrical insulation offered by the silicone based grease can prove to be one of the excellent options.

Is wd40 a dielectric?

With a dielectric strength of 35KV, WD-40 can restore electrical connections, protect components from moisture and even rescue flooded equipment.

Does Vaseline help electrical connections?

Further, Petroleum jelly has good electrical conduction property that can be used widely in electrical applications. Vaseline is mostly used in beauty care but has its prominence in industrial applications too. It is extensively used in the protection of metals and found as a good lubricating agent.

Is dielectric grease the same as white lithium grease?

Dielectric Grease is made up of silicone oils and thickening agents, whereas White Lithium Grease is made up of white lithium-based soaps. Dielectric Grease is used in electrical components, whereas White Lithium Grease is best suited for automobile applications.

Should I use dielectric grease on ignition coils?

TIP: All the ignition coil boots will require proper application of dielectric grease. Only use the green color dielectric grease. Do Not use the white/clear dielectric grease as it will not work for this application. Apply it correctly or the engine conditions/damage may re-occur.

How do you clean the inside of a distributor?

Pick up the distributor cap (don't let any wires come off) and take a look inside it. Wipe the inside clean with a lint-free rag. Do you see any cracks in the cap when you hold it up and shine a light through it? If you do, you can buy another cap very cheaply.

Can I use brake cleaner to clean distributor cap?

pure methanol works very well to remove water, as both alcohols bond to water molecules. I had an 89 Mustang that I just used brake parts cleaner to clean up the inside of the distributor cap. That worked well.

Can you clean distributor cap and rotor?

I use a small sharp screw driver to knock off the crusty stuff on the cap contacts and Scotch Brite to LIGHTLY clean the rotor blade. I do not sand the center spring on the rotor, as that would wear down the carbon contact in the cap. just wipe it down with a bit of MEK on a paper towel.

What should you not use WD 40 on?

• Door hinges. Sure, WD-40 will stop the squeaking, but it also attracts dust and dirt. ...
• Bike chains. WD-40 can cause dirt and dust to stick to a chain. ...
• Paintball guns. WD-40 can melt the seals in the guns.
• Locks. ...
• iPods and iPads.

How often should a distributor cap and rotor be replaced?

Replacing the distributor cap and rotor at the same time should be completed every 50,000 miles, regardless of whether or not they are damaged. If your vehicle does not put on a lot of miles every year, it's also a good idea to replace them every three years.

Is petroleum jelly a conductor?

In fact, Vaseline is an electrical conductor. You prefer other forms of grease because of that. It's purpose is to fill any air gaps that would promote ozone build up in the joint.

Can I use regular grease on electrical connections?

No. Only dielectric greases are designed to be electrically nonconductive. Many other greases do not conduct electricity, but some do - depends on additives to the grease base.

Will dielectric grease cause a short?

However, unless a dielectric lubricant is applied, the connector will continue to wear and will eventually oxidize and corrode. Dielectric grease has two primary benefits: ... Dielectric properties become especially important in multi-pin connectors, eliminating the possibility of a short between pins.
