Vernier height gauge used to measure vertical dimension from reference ground. Vernier Height Gauge consist of a graduated scale or bar is held in a vertical position by a finely ground fixed base.

What is use of Vernier height gauge?

Vernier height gauges are used to determine or measure vertical distances in metrology or metalworking. The vernier height gauges are typically measured on a granite surface plate or to measure the characteristics of apart from a datum plane.

What is the principle of Vernier height gauge?

A height gauge is a measuring device used either for determining the height of objects, or for marking of items to be worked on. The next mark on the vernier scale which was previously behind the corresponding mark on the main scale by 0.1 mm will now be 0.7-0.1= 0.6 mm ahead.

How do you measure gauge height?

This is done by mounting a test indicator to the scriber. Move the indicator to the surface and then zero the gauge. Press down softly on the base of the gauge, if the indicator moves, then the surface is not level. Check and re-clean both surfaces and perform the test again.

What is height gauge least count?

The graduated scale has least count of 0.02 mm like Vernier Caliper has. And the way of taking a reading of measurement in Vernier Height Gauge is same as in Vernier gauge.

How to use Vernier height gauge

What is a height gauge called?

A height gauge is a measuring device used for determining the height of objects, and for marking of items to be worked on. ... Devices similar in concept, with lower resolutions, are used in health care settings (health clinics, surgeries) to find the height of people, in which context they are called stadiometers.

How many types of height gauges are there?

Height gauges may be broadly characterized into four basic types: Vernier height gauges. Dial height gauges. Digital counter height gauges.

What is the working principle of vernier caliper?

The vernier caliper uses the principle of alignment of line segments to determine the more accurate reading. The length of the object to be measured is placed in between the two jaws of the vernier calipers. Certain graduation on the vernier scale gets signed with a reading on the main scale.

What is least count micrometer?

The least count error is the error associated with the resolution of the instrument. A metre ruler may have graduations at 1 mm division scale spacing or interval. A Vernier scale on a caliper may have a least count of 0.1 mm while a micrometer may have a least count of 0.01 mm.

How do I calculate least count?

Least count of a Vernier scale is calculated using the following formula, Least count = Smallest reading on main scaleNumber of divisions on Vernier scale=1mm10 = This is the least count for Vernier Callipers. Hence, the least count for Vernier Callipers is 0.1mm.

Who invented height gauge?

As long ago as 1631, Pierre Vernier, a French scientist, mathematician and engineer invented the “Vernier scale” and so provided the basis for mechanical engineers to measure and manufacture more accurately than ever before.

How accurate is a height gauge?

A typical height gauge is good to a thousandth (0.001″). A micrometer or electronic height gauge is accurate to a tenth (0.0001″) or sometimes even better. The primary weakness in accuracy for a height gauge is how square it is to the reference plane being measured.

How do you read master height?

1. Lock the arm in place after positioning it on top of the piece being measured.
2. Find the "zero" ("0") on the vernier scale that traveled with the arm along the length of the shaft.
3. Record the number on the vertical shaft that falls opposite or just below the zero marking on the vernier scale.

How do you zero a Vernier height gauge?

Zero point checking: Make sure that the height gage reads zero when the scriber measuring face touches the surface plate while under the normal light measuring force. Before using the height gage, wipe off the anti-corrosive oil from the bottom surface of the base and the scriber mount.

How do you use height gauges?

Make the platform surface and the measuring jaw gently touch with a measuring force of about three to five Newton. Also, make sure that the LCD shows a value of zero. To make it zero, press the ON/OFF/ZERO button. Adjust the movable jaw to its nearest inch or centimeter by holding the rod against the surface plate.

What is the unit of vernier caliper?

1, the smallest measurement on the main scale is 0.1 cm or 1 mm. The vernier scale can read to 0.05 mm. So using both scales, the width can be read to the nearest 0.005 cm (or 0.05 mm).

What are the types of vernier scale?

Vernier calipers have two types of scales- a fixed main scale and a moving Vernier scale. The main scale is normally in millimetres or 1/10th of an inch. Vernier calipers score well over standard rulers because they can measure precise readings up to 0.001 inches.

What is vernier caliper with diagram?

Vernier scale is a visual aid, That allows the user to read measurements more precisely than any other instrument. Vernier scale indicates where the measurement lies in between two of the graduations on the main scale. See the following GIF to understanding how the vernier scale is moving over the main scale.

What is a vernier protractor used for?

It is used to measure the angle of any workpiece. It is used for various objects like jigs. Sometimes the vernier scale in the bevel protractor has an attachment for giving a more precise reading.

What is least count of air gauge?

• Least count 0.001, 0.0005mm, and 0.00005.
• Range /-0.040mm, /-0.020mm, and /-0.002.
• Available with Filter Regulator and Mono gauge as attachment.
• Very easy to set and read.

How do you calibrate a height gauge?

Clean all parts of the height gauge including the gauge base, scribe tool, rails, and body. Measure a 1” gauge block with the height gauge. Verify the measurement taken matches the specification on the gauge block. If the reading is incorrect, the gage is out of calibration and will need to be repaired.

Is standard for digital height gauge?

This standard was originally published in 1964 based on BS 1643 : 1950 'Vernier height gauges', issued by the British Standards Institution ( BSI ). ... in India and to bring about similarity in terminology and related requirements given in IS0 standards on vernier calipers.

Which instrument is more precise?

Screw gauge has minimum least count of 0.001cm. Hence, it is most precise instrument.

What is the least count of 15 cm scale?

2) 1cm.
