One of the muscles grouped into the infrahyoid muscles is the sternohyoid muscle. The first root word of sternohyoid is "sterno," this equates to the sternum while the last root word is "hyoid," which references the hyoid bone.

Are there two sternohyoid muscles?

The sternohyoid muscle runs from the dorsal manubrium to the ventrocaudal hyoid bone, with attachments to the sternoclavicular joint capsule, and the sternothyroid muscle attaches along the dorsal midline of the manubrium.

What is the origin of sternohyoid muscles?

Sternohyoid muscle originates from the upper posterior aspect of manubrium of sternum and the posterior surface of the medial end of clavicle . It extends superomedially and inserts to the inferior border of body of hyoid bone, where it adjoins the insertion of the contralateral sternohyoid muscle.

Which are infrahyoid muscles?

The infrahyoid muscles are a group of four paired muscles that lie inferiorly to the hyoid bone in the anterior aspect of neck. This group of muscles is also known as strap muscles. They connect hyoid, sternum, clavicle and scapula. Infrahyoid muscles are organised in two layers.

Which of the following muscles are superficial to sternohyoid?

The infrahyoid muscles are a group of four muscles that are located inferiorly to the hyoid bone in the neck. They can be divided into two groups: Superficial plane – omohyoid and sternohyoid muscles.

What is the action of the Sternothyroid muscle?

Action. The sternothyroid muscles primarily depress and fix the hyoid bone and underlying larynx.

What is the function of sternohyoid muscle?

This group of muscles contains four main muscles: the omohyoid muscle, the sternohyoid muscle, the sternothyroid muscle, and the thyrohyoid muscle. The primary function of this group of muscles is to depress the hyoid bone during speech and swallowing.

Is sternohyoid a Infrahyoid muscle?

Anatomical terms of muscle

The infrahyoid muscles, or strap muscles, are a group of four pairs of muscles in the anterior (frontal) part of the neck. The four infrahyoid muscles are the sternohyoid, sternothyroid, thyrohyoid and omohyoid muscles.

What does Sternohyoid muscle mean?

The sternohyoid muscle is a thin, narrow muscle attaching the hyoid bone to the sternum. It is one of the paired strap muscles of the infrahyoid muscles, serving to depress the hyoid bone.

Why are they called strap muscles?

The name "strap muscles" comes from their long and flat shape, similar to a belt or strap ³.

Why is it called sternothyroid?

The sternothyroid arises from the posterior surface of the manubrium of the sternum, below the origin of the sternohyoid. It also arises from the edge of the cartilage of the first rib.

What movement does the Sartorius perform?

Function. At the hip it flexes, weakly abducts, and rotates the thigh laterally. At the knee, it can flex the leg; when the knee is flexed, it also rotates the leg medially. This muscle plays an important part in stabilisation of the pelvis—especially in women.

Is Sternocleidomastoid a muscle?

The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle is located at the base of your skull on either side of your neck, behind your ears. On both sides of your neck, each muscle runs down the front of your neck and splits to attach to the top of your sternum and collarbone.

What is the smallest muscle in the human body?

Stapedius muscle is termed to be the smallest skeletal muscle in human body, which has a major role in otology. Stapedius muscle is one of the intratympanic muscles for the regulation of sound.

How do you stretch the Sternothyroid muscle?

Slowly move the ear toward the shoulder while the hands stay behind the back. Keep the shoulders down and the hands behind the back. Do not lift the shoulders up when tilting the head to the side. Hold the stretch for at least 20 seconds.

Where is the omohyoid muscle located?

The omohyoid muscle is an infrahyoid muscle of the neck that is innervated by the ansa cervicalis of the cervical plexus receiving fibers from the ventral rami of C1–C3 spinal nerves. The omohyoid is a paired, flat strap of muscle that is made up of superior and inferior bellies joined by an intermediate tendon.

Which is a Suprahyoid muscle?

The suprahyoid muscles are those above or superior to the hyoid bones of the neck. They elevate the hyoid bone when the mandible is fixed in place, and lower the mandible when the hyoid is held firm by muscles beneath it.

What is the Stylohyoid muscle?

The stylohyoid muscle, also known as musculus stylohyoideus in Latin, is one of the suprahyoid muscles of the neck as it extends between the base of the skull and the hyoid bone. It is a slender muscle present along the superior border of the posterior belly of the digastric muscle.

What does SCM muscle do?

When acting together it flexes the neck and extends the head. When acting alone it rotates to the opposite side (contralaterally) and slightly (laterally) flexes to the same side. It also acts as an accessory muscle of inspiration.

How do I remember my hyoid muscles?

A handy mnemonic to recall the muscle attachments of the hyoid bone. The first sentence is for six muscles attaching superiorly, the second sentence is for three muscles attaching inferiorly. Both sentences are in order from lateral to medial: Christopher, He Didn't See Girls Much.

Where is Sternohyoid muscles?

The sternohyoid muscle is one of the infrahyoid “strap” muscles. It is superficial to the sternothyroid and thyrohyoid muscles and inserts just medial to the superior belly of the omohyoid muscle on the inferior border of the hyoid bone.

Where is the temporal muscle?

Temporalis is a broad, radiating muscle, situated at the side of the head which arises from the whole of the temporal fossa (except that portion of it which is formed by the zygomatic bone) and from the deep surface of the temporal fascia.

What is the Platysma muscle?

The platysma is a broad muscle which arises from the fascia that covers the upper segments of the deltoid and pectoralis muscles. Its thin muscle fibers cross over the clavicle and proceed obliquely superiorly, laterally and medially over the neck.

What muscle stabilizes the hyoid?

Secondary Muscles

Both groups of muscles are involved with depression of the mandible and subsequent opening of the mouth, movement of the tongue, swallowing, and speaking. The infrahyoid muscles stabilize the hyoid bone so that the suprahyoid muscles have a firm base to assist with depression of the mandible.

How do you treat a sternocleidomastoid muscle?

Pain management: Rest, ice, heat, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may help reduce pain. Some people find that alternating heat and ice is helpful. Physical therapy: Physical therapy can help a person regain strength in the neck and head. It can also help prevent chronic injuries.
