The tip of the electrode is heated by the electric current to burn or destroy the tissue. Fulguration is a type of electrosurgery. Also called electrocautery, electrocoagulation, and electrofulguration.

Is electrosurgery and electrocautery the same?

Electrocautery refers to direct current (electrons flowing in one direction) whereas electrosurgery uses alternating current. In electrosurgery, the patient is included in the circuit and current enters the patient's body. During electrocautery, current does not enter the patient's body.

What are 3 uses for electrosurgery Fulguration?

The purposes of electrosurgery are to destroy benign and malignant lesions, control bleeding, and cut or excise tissue. The major modalities in electrosurgery are electrodesiccation, fulguration, electrocoagulation, and electrosection.

What is Fulguration of the bladder?

It is the first-line surgical treatment for bladder tumors. Newer technology known as “blue light” cystoscopy uses an optical imaging agent is often used during this procedure at major medical centers. Electricity is also used to seal off bleeding vessels. This is sometimes called electrocauterization or fulguration.

Is Fulguration laser surgery?

Conclusions: Holmium laser fulguration and subsequent mitomycin C instillation in an outpatient regimen is a safe and feasible alternative to transurethral resection of bladder tumours in selected patients.

When do we use Fulguration?

A procedure that uses heat from an electric current to destroy abnormal tissue, such as a tumor or other lesion. It may also be used to control bleeding during surgery or after an injury. The electric current passes through an electrode that is placed on or near the tissue.

How long should you bleed after a cystoscopy?

Most bleeding will stop within 3 to 4 hours, but it's best to rest that day to help stop the bleeding. Call your healthcare provider if the bleeding doesn't stop or if you can't urinate.

Is bladder biopsy painful?

You will feel discomfort that is similar to a strong urge to urinate when the fluid has filled your bladder. You may feel a pinch during the biopsy. There may be a burning sensation when the blood vessels are sealed to stop bleeding (cauterized). After the cystoscope is removed, your urethra may be sore.

Are you asleep during a cystoscopy?

A rigid cystoscopy is where a cystoscope that does not bend is used. You're either put to sleep for the procedure or the lower half of your body is numbed while it's carried out.

What are the side effects of having a cystoscopy?

• Bleeding from your urethra, which can appear bright pink in your urine or on toilet tissue.
• A burning sensation during urination.
• More frequent urination for the next day or two.

How long does electrocautery take to heal?

Healing usually occurs within 2 to 4 weeks. Healing time may be prolonged if a large area of tissue is burned. Scarring may occur.

Does electro surgery leave scars?

The clinical situation will determine which mode of electrosurgery is appropriate to use. If only the epidermis needs treatment, electrodesiccation would be a good choice as it results in very little or no scarring. Electrodesiccation causes very superficial tissue damage by dehydrating the treated skin.

Does electrosurgery hurt?

Electrosurgery cuts extremely rapidly when compared to a diode laser. When on the proper setting, hemostasis is almost immediate. Assuming the electrode is cleaned frequently while operating, the cutting consistency, speed, and depth of cuts are very good. After cutting, the wound is nearly painless.

What is the electrocautery used for?

A procedure that uses heat from an electric current to destroy abnormal tissue, such as a tumor or other lesion. It may also be used to control bleeding during surgery or after an injury. The electric current passes through an electrode that is placed on or near the tissue.

What kind of electrosurgery require a patient return electrode?

In bipolar electrosurgery, both the active electrode and return electrode functions are performed at the site of surgery. The two tines of the forceps perform the active and return electrode functions. Only the tissue grasped is included in the electrical circuit.

How does electrocautery work?

Electrocautery uses electrical current to heat a metal wire that is then applied to the target tissue in order to burn or coagulate the specific area of tissue. It is not used to pass the current through tissue, but rather is applied directly onto the targeted area of treatment.

Is a cystoscopy embarrassing?

Cystoscopy may be an embarrassing procedure for the patient. Exposure and handling of the genitalia must be performed with respect. The patient should remain exposed only as long as is necessary to complete the evaluation.

Can you drive home after a cystoscopy?

After a rigid cystoscopy

make sure someone stays with you for the first 24 hours. do not drive or drink alcohol for at least 24 hours.

What is the prep for cystoscopy?

Preparation for Cystoscopy

There is no “prep” required. There is no need to come in with a full bladder. We will ask you to empty the bladder prior to the procedure. You may eat before your visit.

Are you put to sleep for a bladder biopsy?

What will happen during a bladder biopsy? You may be given general anesthesia to keep you asleep and pain-free during your procedure. Your healthcare provider may instead use local anesthesia. You will not feel pain with local anesthesia, but you may be able to feel some pressure during your procedure.

Are you put to sleep for a biopsy?

Biopsies may be done under local or general anesthesia. For local anesthesia, medicine is injected to numb your breast. You will be awake, but feel no pain. For general anesthesia, you will be given medicine to put you into a deep sleep during the biopsy.

How long does it take to get results from bladder biopsy?

Results and Follow-Up

If you had a biopsy, it may take up to two weeks for your doctor to get the results.

Why does it hurt to pee after cystoscopy?

Your bladder is filled with fluid. This stretches the bladder so that your doctor can look closely at the inside of your bladder. After the cystoscopy, your urethra may be sore at first, and it may burn when you urinate for the first few days after the procedure.

Do you need a catheter after a cystoscopy?

Sterile fluid will flow through the cystoscope to expand your bladder, allowing your physician to study specific areas of your bladder and urethra. After the procedure, the cystoscope will be removed. A catheter (flexible rubber tube) is sometimes left in place to empty your bladder.

Is a cystoscopy considered a surgical procedure?

Cystoscopy is a surgical procedure. This is done to see the inside of the bladder and urethra using a thin, lighted tube.
