Mole: aka Nevus; an elevated patch of melanized skin, often with hair.

Which layer of epidermis consists of up to 30 layers of dead cells?

The stratum corneum is the outermost layer of the epidermis, and is made up of 10 to 30 thin layers of continually shedding, dead keratinocytes.

What layer of the skin is not actually part of the skin?

Hypodermis. The hypodermis (also called the subcutis or subcutaneous layer) functions to connect the integument (epidermis and dermis) to the underlying muscles and organs. The hypodermis is not considered part of the skin, but has several important functions.

Which skin cancer arises from the deepest layer of the epidermis?

The deepest layer of the epidermis, located just above the dermis, contains cells called melanocytes. Melanocytes produce the skin's pigment or color. Melanoma begins when healthy melanocytes change and grow out of control, forming a cancerous tumor.

Which skin layer would a subcutaneous injection be administered?

Subcutaneous injections are administered in the fat layer, underneath the skin. Intramuscular injections are delivered into the muscle. Intradermal injections are delivered into the dermis, or the skin layer underneath the epidermis (which is the upper skin layer).

What can go wrong with a subcutaneous injection?

What are the risks of a subcutaneous injection? You may get an infection, have the needle break in your skin, or hit a nerve. You may have scarring, lumps, or dimpling of the skin from a subcutaneous injection.

Why are subcutaneous injections given at a 45-degree angle?

Insert the needle quickly at a 45- to 90-degree angle. Inserting quickly causes less pain to the patient. Subcutaneous tissue is abundant in well-nourished, well-hydrated people. For patients with little subcutaneous tissue, it is best to insert the needle at a 45-degree angle.

What happens if basal cell goes untreated?

This type of skin cancer needs to be treated and has a high cure rate. If left untreated, basal cell carcinomas can become quite large, cause disfigurement, and in rare cases, spread to other parts of the body and cause death. Your skin covers your body and protects it from the environment.

What are the 4 signs of skin cancer?

• Asymmetry. One part of a mole or birthmark doesn't match the other.
• Border. The edges are irregular, ragged, notched, or blurred.
• Color. The color is not the same all over and may include shades of brown or black, sometimes with patches of pink, red, white, or blue.
• Diameter. ...
• Evolving.

Can you have melanoma for years and not know?

How long can you have melanoma and not know it? It depends on the type of melanoma. For example, nodular melanoma grows rapidly over a matter of weeks, while a radial melanoma can slowly spread over the span of a decade. Like a cavity, a melanoma may grow for years before producing any significant symptoms.

What are the 7 layers of skin?

• Stratum corneum.
• Stratum lucidum.
• Stratum granulosum.
• Stratum spinosum.
• Stratum basale.
• Dermis.
• Hypodermis.

What are the layers of the skin called?

Epidermis. Dermis. Subcutaneous fat layer (hypodermis)

What are the three layers of the skin?

• The epidermis, the outermost layer of skin, provides a waterproof barrier and creates our skin tone.
• The dermis, beneath the epidermis, contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat glands.
• The deeper subcutaneous tissue (hypodermis) is made of fat and connective tissue.

What are the 3 major epidermis made up of?

Three main populations of cells reside in the epidermis: keratinocytes, melanocytes, and Langerhans cells.

What are the five layers of the epidermis?

The layers of the epidermis include the stratum basale (the deepest portion of the epidermis), stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum (the most superficial portion of the epidermis).

What is the relationship between epidermis and dermis?

The dermis connects the epidermis to the hypodermis, and provides strength and elasticity due to the presence of collagen and elastin fibers. It has only two layers: the papillary layer with papillae that extend into the epidermis and the lower, reticular layer composed of loose connective tissue.

What does Stage 1 melanoma look like?

Stage 1: The cancer is up to 2 millimeters (mm) thick. It has not yet spread to lymph nodes or other sites, and it may or may not be ulcerated. Stage 2: The cancer is at least 1 mm thick but may be thicker than 4 mm. It may or may not be ulcerated, and it has not yet spread to lymph nodes or other sites.

What are the 7 warning signs of skin cancer?

• The 7 Signs.
• Changes in Appearance.
• Post-Mole-Removal changes to your skin.
• Fingernail and Toenail changes.
• Persistent Pimples or Sores.
• Impaired Vision.
• Scaly Patches.
• Persistent Itching.

At what age does skin cancer typically occur?

Most basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas typically appear after age 50. However, in recent years, the number of skin cancers in people age 65 and older has increased dramatically. This may be due to better screening and patient tracking efforts in skin cancer.

Is basal cell carcinoma a big deal?

Basal cell carcinoma is quite common, and the number of reported cases in the U.S. has steadily increased. An estimated 3.6 million Americans are diagnosed with BCC each year. More than one out of every three new cancers are skin cancers, and the vast majority are BCCs.

Do all basal cells need to be removed?

Basal or squamous cell skin cancers may need to be removed with procedures such as electrodessication and curettage, surgical excision, or Mohs surgery, with possible reconstruction of the skin and surrounding tissue. Squamous cell cancer can be aggressive, and our surgeons may need to remove more tissue.

Is basal cell malignant or benign?

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is most often a benign form of skin cancer caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. However, it's the most frequently occurring form of all skin cancers, with more than 3 million people developing BCC in the U.S. every year.

What angle is 45?

What is a 45-Degree Angle? A 45-degree angle is exactly half of a 90-degree angle formed between two rays. It is an acute angle and two angles measuring 45 degrees from a right angle or a 90-degree angle. We know that an angle is formed when two rays meet at a vertex.

How do you know if you hit a nerve when injecting?

Unlike some veins, nerves are not visible from outside the body, although you will definitely know if you've hit one while injecting because you'll experience extreme pain and no blood will enter the syringe when you pull back to register. You may feel an electric “burn” along your limb.

Why the skin is gently pinched up into a fold when giving a subcutaneous injection?

Release the skin fold before administering the medication to avoid injecting the medication into compressed tissue. If the skin is pulled taut, it provides easy, less painful entry into the subcutaneous tissue.
