The various modes of failures in cotter joint are discuss below: Failure of the rods in tension. Failure of the spigot in tension across the weakest section. Failure of the rod or cotter in crushing.

What is spigot in cotter joint?

A cotter joint, also known as a socket and spigot joint, is a method of temporarily joining two coaxial rods. One rod is fitted with a spigot, which fits inside a socket on one end of the other rod. Slots in the socket and the spigot align so that a cotter can be inserted to lock the two rods together.

What will be the shearing area of the cotter if it fails?

6. 5. Failure of cotter in shear. Since the cotter is in double shear, therefore shearing area of the cotter = 2 b t and shearing strength of the cotter = 2 b t τ Equating this to load (P), we have P = 2 b t τ From this equation, width of cotter (b) is determined.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cotter joint?

It is quite rigid and can take both tensile and compressive loads. It can be easily assembled and dismantled. The joint can also be used to connect similar pipes, tubes Disadvantages of Sleeve and Cotter Joint: Rectangular rods and dissimilar cylindrical rods cannot be connected using this joint.

Under what circumstances cotter joints are commonly used?

It is used to connect two rods of equal diameters subjected to axial forces. The cotter joint is used to connect the piston rod's extension with the connecting rod in the crosshead in an automobile engine. Cotter joint historically used to connect connecting rods in steam engines and pumps for draining mines.

All Failure Of Cotter Joint With Animation.

Which material is used for cotter joint?

The material selected for cotter joint is plain carbon steel of Grade 30C8 which is having (Syt=400N/mm2), so that cotter joint will fail above (Syt=400N/mm2).

Why cotter is tapered?

Cotter is fitted in the tapered slot and remains in its position because of wedge action. ... i) It is simple to remove the cotter and dismantle the joint parts. ii) Taper ensures tightness of the joint in operation and it prevents slackening of the parts. Generally the value of taper on cotter is 1 in 48 to 1 in 24.

Which one is not part of cotter joint?

Which of the following is not a part of cotter joint? Explanation: There is no point of mentioning collar alone in a cotter joint. It has to be a spigot collar or socket collar. 5.

What is function of cotter joint?

FUNCTION- A cotter joint is used to connect one end of a rod is provided with a socket type of end and the other end of the rod is inserted to a socket. The end of the rod which goes into a socket is also called Spigot. . Joints between the piston rod and the cross need of the steam engine.

What is the function of cotter in cotter joint where it is used?

The function of cotter in cotter joint is to connect rigidly two rods which transmit motion or force without rotation.

What is Gib and cotter joint?

Gib and cotter joints are used for square or rectangular cross-section rods. The end of one rod fits into the end of the other rod, which is designed as a strap. A gib with a cotter is used to make these joints. ... When a gib is used, a tape cotter is provided on one side, and the gib is always on the outside.

How cotter joint is manufactured?

with spigot end and inserted into a socket. taper on one side and a cotter is tightly fits into the slots. slots provided in socket and spigot. ...  Further cotter joint is manufactured by cold forging.

What is the material of socket and spigot joint?

Ductile iron pipe(spigot and socket joint) is a pipe made of ductile cast iron commonly used for potable water transmission and distribution. This type of pipe is a direct development of earlier cast iron pipe.

How socket and spigot joint is designed?

In a socket and spigot cotter joint, one end of the rods (say A) is provided with a socket type of end as shown in Fig. 12.1 and the other end of the other rod (say B) is inserted into a socket. The end of the rod which goes into a socket is also called spigot. A rectangular hole is made in the socket and spigot.

What is socket and spigot?

The end connection of a fitting that is to be assembled into another fitting is called the “Spigot.” The spigot end of a fitting has the same outside diameter as pipe. The common female connection of PVC fittings is referred to as the socket or hub, and the spigot end of a fitting can be inserted into a Hub or Socket.

What cotter means?

1 : a wedge-shaped or tapered piece used to fasten together parts of a structure. 2 : cotter pin.

What is knuckle joint and its application?

A knuckle joint is a form of pin joint that's used to transmit tension loads while allowing rotation in one plane. ... Knuckle joints are often used to connect rods subjected to tension in structures such as roof ties, bridges, and cranes. The links of a chain are also considered a series of knuckle joints.

Which part is not suitable for screw jack?

Which of the following does not form the important part of the screw jack? Explanation: There is no specific requirement of coupling in the screw jack. Explanation: At root of threads, the area parallel to direction of force is considered which is equal to circumference x thickness x no. of threads.

Which of following is a part of knuckle joint?

Explanation: In rare explanation, two rods with forks and one rod with eye is connected. 4. A knuckle joint is also called socket pin joint. Explanation: A knuckle joint is also called a Forked Pin Joint.

Which one of the following is a permanent fastener?

Rivets are a permanent fastener, in that once removed, they cannot be re-used. Rivets are used in a number of industries and applications but are most commonly used to join metal sheets and plates.

Why is cotter tapered on both side?

Cotter is fitted in the tapered slot and remains in its position because of wedge action. ... i) It is simple to remove the cotter and dismantle the joint parts. ii) Taper ensures tightness of the joint in operation and it prevents slackening of the parts. Generally the value of taper on cotter is 1 in 48 to 1 in 24.
