Photochromic lens molecules make light, dark, and every shade in between possible. When photochromic lenses are exposed to UV light, trillions of photochromic molecules in the lens begin to change structure. This reaction is what causes the lenses to darken. ... Each formula is integrated into the surface of the lens.

How does a glass photochromic lens work?

How Do Photochromic Lenses Work? Tiny molecules of silver halide and chloride are embedded within a photochromic lens which is invisible and clear until exposed to sunlight/UV rays. A chemical process takes place when exposed to sunlight/UV and the molecules effectively move, change shape and absorb the light.

What happens when photochromic glass darkens?

A photochromic lens is an optical lens that darkens on exposure to light of sufficiently high frequency, most commonly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. In the absence of activating light, the lenses return to their clear state.

Is photochromic glass hard?

Glass photochromic lenses are often twice as heavy as plastic. They are not uniform in tint (which affects the colour of the lens when activated by sunlight) and are not shatter resistant. Plastic photochromic lenses, on the other hand, are both shatter and scratch resistant.

What is the science behind photochromic lenses?

Plastic photochromic lenses work through a reversible chemical reaction, where a colourless molecule is converted to a coloured form by the application of light energy. ... Thermal energy or simply heat drives the photochromic molecules back to the clear state.

Transitions Gen 8 | How do Transitions work? | (Photochromic technology)

How long do photochromic lenses last?

Do photochromic lenses wear out? Light sensitive lenses can lose their ability to darken over time. On average, photochromic lenses will begin to wear out in about three years.

What is photochromic glass used for?

Photochromic materials can be used for the design of optical switches, optical data storage devices, energy-conserving coatings, eye-protection glasses, and privacy shields. Photochromic materials and systems have several important uses depending on the rates of the optical transformations.

Can you wear photochromic lenses at night?

Photochromic lenses aren't very helpful for night driving. Light adaptive lenses primarily protect against sunlight, UV rays and blue light. They don't activate indoors under artificial lighting or at night in the presence of headlights and streetlights.

Why are photochromic lenses not suitable for driving?

This is the lens colour of choice for professional drivers, so they can't be wrong! Tint density is also a major consideration. Too dark, and you'll not have enough light entering your eyes. ... But regular photochromic lenses don't work behind a car windscreen; they are activated by UV light and the windscreen blocks UV.

How do you activate photochromic lenses?

Put them in your freezer for 15 minutes. Take them out, put them in the sun for a few good minutes, let them get good and dark. Something about chlling them first activates more of the chemical in the lens, thus producing deeper tint ever after.

Are photochromic glasses worth it?

Cost effective – Photochromic or transitional lenses can actually be quite cost effective. ... Protects your eyes – Transitional lenses do more than function as sunglasses. They actually filter out a good deal of the harmful UV rays emitted from the sun, leading to healthier and happier eyes.

Can you add photochromic to glasses?

The answer to this question is an unequivocal yes. In fact, the decision to add anti-reflective coating to your eyewear should be made as soon as possible. If you choose AR before the purchase, it can be integrated into the manufacturing process to be more cost-effective and integrated.

Is photochromic a coating?

WeeTect Photochromic Technology (WPT) includes two types of photochromic technologies. Once of them is photochromic coating. The substrate is injection molded polycarbonate lenses, polycarbonate visors or polycarbonate face shields. Then we use special photochromic material to do photochromic coating on the surface.

Are photochromic lenses good for computer work?

Photochromic lenses are an excellent solution to guard against computer vision syndrome. Bonus: Photochromic lenses work just as well as regular sunglasses for outdoor use. They shield your eyes from harmful blue light exposure as well as 100% of the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

How dark can photochromic lenses get?

These darkness levels may change depending on weather or temperature. Transitions® VII gray and brown photochromics darken anywhere from 60%-80% in bright sunlight. ... Vision Ease LifeRx® polycarbonate photochromic lenses in gray and brown darken to around 35-55% in bright sunlight.

What are the best photochromic lenses?

Transition™ has created several options over the years, but the four best known are Signature GEN 8, XTRActive, Vantage, and DriveWear. It is good to know that not all lens types have polarization capabilities, and only some are recommended to wear while operating a vehicle.

Is polarized or photochromic better?

Polarized lenses reduce glare wherever they can: on bright, horizontal surfaces, such as white sand beaches, snow, and sunlight reflecting off water. Photochromic lenses, on the other hand, are usually clear but turn dark in bright sunlight. Then, when you go back somewhere dimmer, they become clear once more.

What are the disadvantages of polarized sunglasses?

• looking at LCD screens.
• flying.
• low-light situations and driving at night.
• people whose sight may be sensitive to how the lenses change lighting.

Are Polarized sunglasses bad for driving?

Studies have shown that sunglasses with polarized lenses make driving measurably safer than standard tinted lenses. A driver wearing polarized sunglasses and traveling at 50 mph has an average stopping distance 23 to 27 feet sooner than a driver wearing standard lenses.

Can I drive with photochromic lenses?

Photochromic lenses work in UV light, which most car windscreens block out. As a result, they tend not to react as quickly in a car as they would normally. Tinted glasses, lenses or visors should not be worn at night or in poor visibility, but are fine to use in good driving conditions.

What is a disadvantage of using photochromic particles with self darkening glasses?

Disadvantages: They don't get darkened enough when worn inside a vehicle. When worn inside a car where less UV light is present, the ability of the lenses to darken is reduced. Some people who wear photochromic also have a cheaper tinted pair just to use in the car.

What are the benefits of photochromic lenses?

• Allow you to navigate the workplace with one set of safety glasses. Glasses automatically adapt to changes in light conditions. ...
• They offer 100% protection against harmful UVA, UVB, and UVC rays.

Who should use photochromic glasses?

Photochromic glasses can be particularly good for children who are unlikely to be able to juggle two separate pairs of gasses - regular and sunglasses. It also helps their eye health from an early age by protecting them from the sun and UV rays.

Which substance is used in photochromic glass?

Photochromic glasses are often made by embedding silver chloride (AgCl) or another silver halide in microcrystalline form into some glass. When the silver chloride is exposed to ultraviolet light in the UV_A spectral region, it forms tiny silver particles which absorb light.

Do photochromic lenses work indoors?

They are clear indoors and darken outdoors in bright sunlight. As light conditions change, the lenses adjust quickly to provide the appropriate level of tint. ... Transitions lenses begin to darken the moment they are exposed to UV light. The greater the intensity of UV radiation, the darker the lenses become.
