The hypertrophic chondrocytes (before apoptosis) secrete vascular endothelial cell growth factor, which induces the sprouting of blood vessels from the perichondrium. Blood vessels forming the periosteal bud invade the cavity left by the chondrocytes and branch in opposite directions along the length of the shaft.

What is a periosteal bud composed of?

n. A vascular connective tissue bud from the perichondrium that enters the cartilage of a developing long bone and contributes to the formation of a center for ossification.

How is the bone collar formed?

The osteoblasts form a collar of compact bone around the diaphysis. At the same time, the cartilage in the center of the diaphysis begins to disintegrate. Osteoblasts penetrate the disintegrating cartilage and replace it with spongy bone. This forms a primary ossification center.

How is Intramembranous bone formed?

In intramembranous ossification, a group of mesenchymal cells within a highly vascularized area of the embryonic connective tissue proliferates and differentiates directly into preosteoblasts and then into osteoblasts. These cells synthesize and secrete osteoid which is calcified to become woven bone.

How is Endochondral bone formed?

In endochondral ossification, bone develops by replacing hyaline cartilage. Activity in the epiphyseal plate enables bones to grow in length (this is interstitial growth). Appositional growth allows bones to grow in diameter. Remodeling occurs as bone is resorbed and replaced by new bone.

Endochondral Ossification

What are the 4 steps of bone repair?

There are four stages in the repair of a broken bone: 1) the formation of hematoma at the break, 2) the formation of a fibrocartilaginous callus, 3) the formation of a bony callus, and 4) remodeling and addition of compact bone.

Why does ossification end?

Ossification of long bones proceeds until only a thin strip of cartilage remains at either end; this cartilage, called the epiphyseal plate, persists until the bone reaches its full adult length and is then replaced with bone.

What is the longest and heaviest bone in the body?

Your femur, or thighbone, is the largest bone in your body. The head of your femur fits into your hip socket and the bottom end connects to your knee.

Does intramembranous ossification stop?

The development of bone from fibrous membranes is called intramembranous ossification; development from hyaline cartilage is called endochondral ossification. Bone growth continues until approximately age 25.

What are the 3 stages of bone development?

The process of bone formation is called osteogenesis or ossification. After progenitor cells form osteoblastic lines, they proceed with three stages of development of cell differentiation, called proliferation, maturation of matrix, and mineralization.

How can I make my bones grow longer?

1. Eat Lots of Vegetables. ...
2. Perform Strength Training and Weight-Bearing Exercises. ...
3. Consume Enough Protein. ...
4. Eat High-Calcium Foods Throughout the Day. ...
5. Get Plenty of Vitamin D and Vitamin K. ...
6. Avoid Very Low-Calorie Diets. ...
7. Consider Taking a Collagen Supplement. ...
8. Maintain a Stable, Healthy Weight.

What are the thin plates forming spongy bone called?

Spongy bone consists of plates (trabeculae) and bars of bone adjacent to small, irregular cavities that contain red bone marrow. The canaliculi connect to the adjacent cavities, instead of a central haversian canal, to receive their blood supply.

What happens during periosteal bud invasion?

Blood vessels forming the periosteal bud invade the cavity left by the chondrocytes and branch in opposite directions along the length of the shaft. The blood vessels carry hemopoietic cells, osteoprogenitor cells, and other cells inside the cavity. The hemopoietic cells will later form the bone marrow.

What is the periosteal collar?

The periosteal collar causes the underlying cartilage cells to begin to degenerate and die. The primary center of ossification begins by calcification of matrix of the diaphysis and eroding by blood vessels. These blood vessels bring osteoprogenitor cells with them when they penetrate the bone collar.

What an epiphysis is?

Epiphysis, expanded end of the long bones in animals, which ossifies separately from the bone shaft but becomes fixed to the shaft when full growth is attained. ... It is connected to the bone shaft by the epiphyseal cartilage, or growth plate, which aids in the growth of bone length and is eventually replaced by bone.

At what age do bones stop growing?

Through the growing years, a layer of cartilage (the growth plate) separates each epiphyses from the bone shaft. Between 17 and 25 years, normal growth stops. The development and union of separate bone parts is complete.

What is the first bone to ossify?

The clavicle is the first bone to ossify in the devel- oping embryo. At approximately 5 weeks of gesta- tion, primary ossification of the clavicle proceeds by membranous ossification of two centers with no prior cartilaginous anlage.

What are the 2 types of ossification?

There are two types of bone ossification, intramembranous and endochondral. Each of these processes begins with a mesenchymal tissue precursor, but how it transforms into bone differs.

What is the heaviest organ in the human body?

The largest solid internal organ is your liver. It weighs approximately 3–3.5 pounds or 1.36–1.59 kilograms and is about the size of a football. Your liver is located beneath your rib cage and lungs, in the upper right area of your abdomen.

What is the weakest bone in your body?

Clavicle: Clavicle, or collar bone, is the body's softest and weakest bone. It is easy to break since it is a thin bone that runs horizontally between your breastbone and shoulder blade.

What causes ossification?

HO occurs after other injuries, too. HO has been known to occur in cases of traumatic brain injury, stroke, poliomyelitis, myelodysplasia, carbon monoxide poisoning, spinal cord tumors, syringomyelia, tetanus, multiple sclerosis, post total hip replacements, post joint arthroplasty, and after severe burns.

Do bones grow back?

But in the majority of cases, bone makes use of its remarkable ability to regenerate. This means that the new bone that fills the fracture closely resembles the bone before the injury, without a trace of a scar.

What is the law of ossification?

Vaishakh Rajkumar. Emergency Medicine. According to the law of ossification, the centre of ossification that appears first,is the last to unite. The fibula bone violates the law as its distal end appears first but unites before its proximal part which appears later.@Dr. Vimal Modi sir.
